Desperate need for homes for teenagers Barney Lewis, director of the Children's Aid Society in Durham Region, is alarmed about the lack of substitute facilities available for teen - 1 agers coming under the agency's care. At present, seven youngsters youngsters between 13 and 15 years of age should be removed from their homes but "we have no place to put them," he says. And the problem is not about to be cleared. The government has repealed repealed section 8 of the Training School Act so a child can no longer be sent to a school for behavioral problems. 14 COMING "We're going to be asked to accommodate these children and have already been told we'll receive a group of 14 during the fall and spring," the director says. Extra homes are desperately desperately needed so teenagers can be properly placed where most suited - as of July, 133 children out of 296 in the agency.'s care were between 13 and 17 years of age. Ordinarily, he says, people are being sought to provide security, warmth, concern and an acceptance that the child is a unique individual. Expressing in figures the growing number of teenagers requiring Children's Aid assistance, assistance, social worker Grant Berchan, described the provincial provincial trend as follows : From previously totalling 50 per cent of the agency's cases, in past years, it is now been reported at 66 per cent. "I think the kids are fighting for their rights today in an attempt to have a go at liberation," he says. "We're, getting into a society society where adults are becoming becoming ! more democratic and children are learning about civil liberties and women's right's". Mr. Berchan cited the increase in unharmonious relationships between teenager teenager and parents as as result of today's child maturing at a faster pace. When the son or daughter is younger, a parent has the power to tell him or her what to do-but the kids of this generation are growing up so quickly, they're losing that power at a much earlier stage, he says. Many wish to be removed from the family environment, but then there are also feelings of guilt and anger which must then be resolved. The main goal of the Children's Children's Aid Society is to "unite the family." Supervisor of family services services Morton Marder says taking a child from a home is an abuse that's hard on the youngster. "We don't remove him unless it's absolutely necessary." necessary." Most cases can be dealt with in the home and never require a family breakup. breakup. Up and Down the Book Stacks Thurs.
