Mr. Harry Mercer of the Shell Orono Garage on Main Street has been with Shell Oil operating his own garage for fifty years. Mr. Sid Lancaster has been associated with the company for a period of forty-five years operating his own garage on Highway No. 2 east of Newcastle. Both men and their wives are to be congratulated on this occasion for the hours upon hours they have given to not only their patrons over the years but to the community as a whole. Harry Mercer, better known as 'Pete', has dedicated his life to his profession but still found time to be a part of most activities which went on in his community. The untold hours of this service will never be recorded but for those that know him well there is no need. It has been most evident over the years: Mrs. Mercer, known more affectionately as Edna or "Mom Mercer" shares in the duties in her community as has her husband. The Lancasters in their community of Newtonville have also played a most active part and continue to do so. No one continues in business for forty-five and fifty years without having a real regard for his fellowman. Both couples nave earned the respect of their communities and desire a big "Thank-you" along with congratulations. LET'S BE FACTUAL Last week in a letter to the editor Counc. Lyall made claim that Mayor Rickard was on one hand supporting regional rates for water and sewers and on the other hand was voting against such a move at regional council. It so happens that the construction by-laws to which councillor Lyall referred to were not in any way associated with regional rates and in fact Mayor Rickard was not speaking or voting with a forked tongue. It was not that Counc. Lyall didn't have his fact correct as to the happens. The discrepency came when the Councillor was assessing what had happened and in this he was wrong. The Durham Regional council has yet to vote on regional rates for'water and sewers. This may come in the very near future and there seems no doubt that Newcastle users of water and sewer will benefit for a single rate for the entire region. So to speak a pail of water costs the same whether you live in Oshawa or Orono. Further Counc. Lyall should check with Regional Commissioner of Works regarding capital repayment under an overall regional service plan. He will find that only those who have water and sewers will contribute to such capital costs and those in rural areas will bear none of this cost. In no way does either the Ministry of the Authority wish to disrupt the work of timber management now employed in the forest. There is a feeling however that the forests could be of greater use to the area and area residents for recreational recreational purposes. At the present time the lands are under agreement between the Ministry of Natural Resources and the Ganaraska whereby the Ministry Ministry through their forestry branch carry out * timber management of the forests. This branch carries out all management in the forest, planting of trees and thinning. In the past few years they have also development three small picnic areas in the forest but funds are not really available to them for this purpose. The forests are used by area residents for recreation such as picnicing, cross-country skiing, trail-biking, hunting, snowmobiling, orienteering and hiking but is of an uncontrolled nature and some problems are begining to arise with no control over them at all. It is for this reason that the study is to be made to see just what could be maintained in the forests without disruption to the timber stand. It is now expected that a seven-man joint committee will be set up to discuss further possible happenings in the forest. This committee would represent the Authority and the Ministry both at the District and Regional level. The Authority with a view into the future has also made application to gain control of the buildings in the Durham. Forests just east of Highway 115 which in the future may fit into the overall plan of recreation and forestry. The Region of Durham, who have gained the Durham Forests, was about to dispose of the buildings, when the Authority noted their plans for the future to the administrative committee. The Ganaraska Authority have also met with a repre- setative of the Ministry of Correctional Services regarding regarding the buildings at Cold Springs which could well become another focal point in the overall scheme for the future. At the present time a proposal has been made by the Correctional Ministry and will be considered by the Authority. The Ministry of Correction al Service which in the past have operated a camp at Cold Springs have this year closed the camp for this purpose but do maintain ownership of the buildings and do keep a 24 hour surveillance of the property. The Authority is also to set up a committee to look into possibilities for the camp and to deter mine just how it might operate if they should sometime sometime in the future become charged with its operation within an over-all forest plan. The Cold Spring Camp has many facilities including sleeping sleeping accommodations, an equipped kitchen, a large gym building, outdoor rink, other buildings, a maple syrup shack and pens and equipment equipment for the raising of pheasnat. It is located in a most natural location in the forests. Last winter the Authority did operate a small chalet at the Camp and expect to carry on this operation again this year, providing approval is obtained from the Ministry of Correctional Services.
