H. Robert Hay ne, B.A., L.Th. Would you consider being a 4-H leader in the South Durham area ? The 4-H Homemaking Homemaking Club Program offers courses, including Cooking, Sewing and Crafts to young people ages 12 to 26. There are about 15 clubs led by volunteer volunteer leaders, which are being conducted at the present time throughout Durham Home Economist, Mary Tompkins, points out that there is a problem in the Homemaking Club Program, as in so many other organizations, in that it is difficult to find interested leaders to teach these young people. Each club works best with a leader and an assistant leader sharing the responsibility of the club. The requirements of the leaders are as follows ; Attendance at a two-day training school held locally to learn the subject matter of the upcoming project; to hold a meeting once a week for 7 to 9 weeks to teach the 4-h members the project area; to attend an Achievement Day - held on a Saturday - at the end of the project, where the young people are tested on the information they have learned learned and present a Skit or Exhibit on some aspect of the subject matter studied. The Southern part of Durham Durham needs 4-H leaders in rural areas and in town. Bowmanville, itself, has a group of keen girls who would be eager to take the next project if 4-H leaders were available. A training school for the next club, "Clothes for Leisure", a sewing project, will be held in Bowmanville the second, week in January If you enjoy sewing and like working with young people, then possibly you would gain a great deal of satisfaction leading a 4-H project in your own area. If so, or if you know someone who might, please contact Mary Tompkins, Home Home Economist at the Ministry of Agriculture and Food in Bowmaville or call 623-3348. by Rod Stork, Associate Agricultural Representative. SOIL SAMPLE NOW: During the past two weeks we have had a large number of farmers contact us as to whether or not they should be taking soil samples or send them to the University of Guelph, however, we would strongly urge farmers to take soil samples now, before freeze-up and then send them to Guelph once the mail strike has been settled. We have received notice that a change has been made at the Soil Science Building at Guelph Guelph to allow people to drbp off weekends. A box is now in place at the main back door of the Soil Science Building with the label, '-'soil Sample Night Drop" on it.. This will allow people to drop off soil samples on the weekends or anytime after regular business hours at the Soil Science Bulding. If you know of students who are attending University of Guelph, Guelph, or anyone else who is going up. to Guelph, you can give the samples to them and send them by this method or as we said, take the samples now and wait until the strike has been settled and then Call your licensed Plumbing and Mechanical Contractor who sells, installs and guarantees CARMAN Plumbing and Heating Phone 983-5207 Slow-up, OPP has mobile radar unit Clarke Public LIBRARY PHONE 983-5507 Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Saturday 10:00 to 12:00 a.m. Orono, Ontario Francis Tennant Fuels Phone 983-5693 'Flowers with Feelifig' For Any Occasion Tel. 623-3377 -x Bev A 3lmal c4%t 133 Church Street Bowmanville FRESH & DRIED FLOWER ARRANGEMENTS for WEDDINGS, FUNERALS, HOSPITAL and HOME Order your Custom Dried Floral Arrangements for Christmas Soon Attention Farmers!! A mobile radar unit that police can use while driving now is being used by the Newcastle OPP detachment. The unit replaces stationary radar equipment. OPP community services officer Gary Brun ton said that the new unit: has the "unique ability to selectively monitor speeds of approaching vehicles vehicles while the patrol car is moving." The unit is attached to the inside of a cruiser window, ând the speed recorder is locàted on the dash board. Const. Brun ton said the radar beam is sufficiently long to enable a policeman to check the speed of an oncoming oncoming vehicle, stop his cruiser, and flag down the speeder. The unit will be used in the near future on regular two lane roads, and not on Highway 401.
