The building is currently owned by the Northumberland and Newcastle Newcastle Board of Education who have approached council if they were interested in obtaining the building. At that time council gave a negative answer not knowing that the Museum Board could be interested. The request from the local Museum and Archives Board has been sent to the Community Community Service Committee for consideration, who will report to council on the matter. The Museum Board in their request to council stated that they wished to expand and to be more use to the community. community. They wish to promote interest in and research local history as well as to encourage encourage the awareness in people of the value of their heritage. The letter to council notes the desirable location of the old school just off highway 115 and county road nine at Kirby. It is here that they May use steam from generating plants Following MPP Doug Moffatt's suggestion last week week that hot water from the Darlington Hydro generating plant should be considered as a source of energy for heating homes Dr. Finley, a senior advisor to the Ministry of Energy, pointed out that a study is underway using the Pickering Nuclear plant and •he government's proposed rth Pickering project as a "itiodel to study the possibility of piping hot water from a power station to heat a community. The study now underway is to get a realistic economic assessment of the proposal. The study is being financed by the ministry. It is expected to be completed by December 31st, 1975. The present study is expected expected to determine if a detailed study should be undertaken in this matter. Dr. Finley states that the idea is to take out part of the steam used to turn the turbine using it to heat water which in turn would be piped to centres of use. In the Pickering proposal the water would have to be piped some five miles from the plant to the proposed town site. The committee is also comparing the costs with type of heating compared to that of gas and oil. It was noted that this type of heating has been used in Europe for a long time Building a House? or remodelling your present one? It is not the intention to close out the museum location in Orono but rather compliment it with the Kirby School. It is also the intention of the board to have exhibitions of skills and techniques, to use it for community projects, group group meetings, to hold craft classes and displays which could be available on a year round basis. It is pointed out that at the present time the Museum Board has not place to hold such meetings, displays or crafts. The letter in closing states "The more pride and interest there is in the past, the more interest there will be for the future; this is the health and strenght of society." Miss Diane Layng, curator at the Clarke Museum, states that the Board is seeking support from the community and has posted a number of petitions and information at numerous locations in the area. She asks that people sign these petitions to add support to their plans. Petitions and information sheets have been placed at Armstrong's IGA, Clarke Library, Library, Midtown and the Post dating back to 1909 in Denmark. Denmark. It is also used in Sweden, Germany, and Russia. Russia. A thirty-six man team from Ontario visited Sweden where they studied the operation in that country. Dr. Finley also said the study group is considering the use of the hot water produced by the cooling system of such plants as in Pickering. He did say that preliminary studies indicate that this type of source did not. appear encouraging. encouraging. A surprise birthday party was held for Mary Ann, at the home of her mother, Velma Armstrong of Orono. The party was arranged by her mother and her Orono Skating Club friends of a few years ago. Girls were present from Windsor, Orillia, Barrie, Toronto, Bowmanville, Thornhill, Thornhill, Oshawa and Orono and one young man who now lives in Toronto. A few members of the executive and some sewing mothers were also present. Last but not least was our 'super' Arena Manager, Dane Found without, whom we never could have put on a carnival in mid-March on natural ice, sometimes on ice that had been mopped up by his hockey boys. We had hoped to see Mr. Ed. Neilson, now of Toronto, who made many wonderful props for our carnivals, but had to be satisfied by a message brought by his daughter. We remembered things too. #•##•#•••••••• Office in Orono. Lists are also posted in Leskard, Kendal, Kirby, Newcastle Village and Newtonville. We remembered Ernest Dent who looked after our lighting at Carnival time (no charge), Mrs. Kit Linton who was our costume director, Mrs. Alice Chafer and many others who planned, sewed, donated and helped in every way possible. Our club professionals of this era' were Miss Dianne Hambly of Oshàwa and Miss Nan Unsworth. They were respected for their skating ability and loved by all members. Moving pictures taken by an amateur photographer of action on lumpy ice or on fairly guod ice but during a miserable wind storm were shown and were a real source of merriment as the girls watched themselves trying to keep their costumes in place. Nothing phased these girls. They were a joy to work with and are still a joy because they are now fine mothers and some of them are skating mothers. One visiting guest that we will never forget skated his full routine over soft ice and puddles of water. He was none other than Don Jackson who later became a world champion. champion. tylautenA by packman Since 1912 Distinctive Floral Themes For Any Occasion KÎ2 King SI.
