6--Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, January 7th, 1976 Local Sports Q M H. A. PEEWEES HAVE ACTIVE WÈEK ,The Orono O.M.H.A. PeeWees played four games the past week and did turn in a fine schedule of play by the entire team. On Mon., December 29 the local boys 1 played an exhibition game with the ^Newcastle Minor PeeWees (11 years olds) in Newcastle. Orono won the game by score of 4-1 Orqno opened the scoring on a goal'by Dennis Klawitter from Duane Major. Alan Webster netted the next goal unassisted and then Duane Major blasted one by the Newcastle goalie from, Dennis fClawitter. Newcastle scored their goal in the second period while Duane Major scored his second of the night from Pete Krukhert and , Dennis Klawitter. Kevin Talsma played well in the Orono nets. The Orono PeeWees and the Newcastle Major PeeWees played to a one-all tie on Staurday night at the Orono Arena in an exhibtion game. Newcastle scored their goal, in the opening period while the second period was . scorless for both teams. On a pass out from Dennis Klawitter, Duane Major was able to find the top corner of the Newcastle net to give Orono the tie., Dan Mitchell and Kevin Talsma both played well in the Orono nets with Jim Moffat and Joe Davis also turning in fine performances. '* On Friday night the boys travelled to Port Hope for another league game. The-local boys came up with a fine game for two periods with no goals being scored. Then in the third the roof fell in on Orono yvith Port Hope scoring five goals to defeat Orono 5-0. On Tuesday, December 30th Uxbridge was in town for a re-scheduled game which was snowed out. Jhey opened the scoring in the first period and added another in the second. In the third period Dennis Klawitter scored the lone Orono goal from Dennis Krukhert. Although Orono hustled throughout the game they were unable to get the equalizer. Dan Mitchell put a fine game together in the Orono nets. This Saturday night the Orono PeoWees will play host to the league leading Staoufville team at the Orono Arena with game time set at 7.00 p.m UNITED COUNTIES MIDGETS On Friday night Grafton defeated the Orono Midgets by a score of 7-3 in a penalty filled game. The three Orono goals were scored by Alan McCarthy, Scott West and Terry Deriet with assists to Rick Williams, Lenny Jacob, Alan McCarthy.and Scott West. Don Jacob played a strong game in the Orono net as Grafton outshoot Orono by a considerable mark. ORONO O.M.H.A. BANTAMS MAKE FIRST WIN A DECISIVE WIN The Orono O.M.H.A. Bantams came up with their first win of the season when on the local ice they defeated the Colborne-Grafton Combines by a score of 5-1. The visitors opened the scoring in the first period. In the second period the tide turned for the local boys when they came out playing as a team. Tom Gustar opened the Orono scoring on a pass from Ken Evans. Then Ken Evans scored on a play with Tom Gustar and David Sunstrum . This put Orono out in front 2-1 at the end of the second. In the third period David Hutton added two goals with assists to Tofa Gustar and Stephen Clark. Marcel Charland completed Orono's scoring with assists to Ross Stutt and K^n Evans. DalejDubeau played an excellent game in the Orono goal making Many brilliant saves. Orono was defeated in two previous games. Tuesday night Newcastle took a 3-0 win from the locals who just did not appear to have enough 'go'. Friday night in Port Hope although Orono went down to defeat 4-1 they did play well with team members playing their position along with a team effort. Stephen Haynes 1 scored the Orono goal with an assist to Marcel Charland. ORONO PEEWEE HORNETS EDGE MILLBROOK The Orono PeeWee Hornet in a close checking game edged out Millbrook Flyers 3-2. Glenn Evans and Kirk Carr scored the first two Qrotio. goals with Don Frier coming in for the winner. Terry Coombes in the Orono nets played a big part in keeping the local boys in.the game and coming up with the win. COUNCIL GRANT OTtONO ATHLETIC $4500.00 The Town of Newcastle Council has approved a grant of $4500.00 for the Orono Amateur Athletic Association to assist with reparis and new plant installed this year at the Orono Arena. In a recorded vote all of council approved the grant excepting Councillor Hobbs of Bowmanville. The grant is made subject to that it can be accommodated in the 1975 budget. It is understood however that a surplus will exist this year for the Town of Newcastle. will he lam up for six weeks. Our deepest sympathy goes to Mrs. Velma Jakeman on the sudden passing of her husband Alf on December 28th. Although he had had heart trouble for some time he was feeling ' pretty good and looking forward to helping at the Jamboree on the next programme. Funeral service was held from Morris Funeral Home on December 31st with Spring Interment, Orono. Another well known member member of the fair board passed away suddenly on Sun. Jan. KIRBY NEWS Mr. and Mrs. Lavern Patterson, Patterson, Orono, Mr. and Mrs. Bruce Mercer and sons, Hampton, Miss Susan Ball and Mr. Les Hrebicek, Toronto, Toronto, celebrated Christmas Day with Mr. and Mrs. Ken Ball. Susan, Les and Mr. and Mrs. Ken Ball spent New Year's day with Mr. and Mrs. Bruce Mercer, Hampton. Sorry fo hear Mr. Ken Ball slipt and broke his foot on Dec. 28th and VENEZIA Restaurant .
