He vows hé is going to get the silent majority to let its opinions be known. "All too often," he said, "the vocal minority gets the attention while the majority is not being heard." He cited the fiasco at Pickering airport as proof of his statement. There, a handful handful of people managed to convince two governments that the airport should not be built. Since then, a much larger segment of society has made its wishes known. They wanted the airport built all along but just didn't bother to make their wishes known. The media must take some of the blame for the minority being heard to the disadvantage disadvantage of the majority. After all, one defintion of news is that it is something that doesn't happen. Therefore, when someone someone says something that is out of the norm, he gets a story, no matter how outlandish outlandish his opinion. Look at the publicity Squeaky Fromme got when she made an attempt on President Ford's life. Until that day,, she was a cockob who. seemed to think the supreme cuckoo, Charles Manson, offered some sort of ideal for mankind. Had she been caught with a gun in any other circumstances, she would would have been quickly classified classified as deranged and would have been promptly sent off for treatment. But all the blame cannot be laid to the media's door. After all, if we printed only what the majority thought, we would be remiss in our duty and we would be publishing some pretty dull papers too. The silent majority must also accept a large share of the blame for its position. That huge mass often just doesn't bother to make sure that their opinion is ever known. In most instances, as in the airport case, the silent majority never makes a peep until it is presented with a fait accompli with which it is in violent disagreement. Then, as with the airport, it's too late. We hope that Mr. Robertson can stir up that huge mass but we have some doubts. It's been tried before. the same ratio as the 1975 property taxes were apportioned. apportioned.
