8--Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, January 28th, 1976 Local Sports PLAN REUNION FOR ORONO ORPHANS Plans are now well underway and invitations have been sent out for a reunion for those who in former years played for the Orono Orphan Hockey Club. Thfe date has been set for March 13th with the reunion and banquet to be held in the Orono Oddfellow's Hall. Mr. Bill Armstrong states that there were, close to one hundred who had over the years played for the Orphans. It is expected that some one hundred and fifty could well attend the outing. The Orphans had their" hev-day in the 1950's with the majority of the players coming, up through the minor teams in Orono. Our newspaper files Show the club still playing in 1961. In 1962 many were members of the Bowmanville , Shamrock Intermediate club. There is no doubt that this group has left a lot of memories for almost everyone in the village of that., era when hockey and the Orphans were synonymous. It will be a great day for many come March 13th. CAMSPORT TYKES CONTINUE WINNING WAYS The Orono Cainsport Tykes continue their winning ways and on Saturday took a 4-1 win over Ops Township Tykes. Bradley Roberts netted the puck for two counters with the other goals going to Paul Henry and Randy Cowan. Assists went to John Cowan, Randy Cowan and Billy Buchanan. • ROAST BEEF ATOMS RING UP WIN AND TIE The Roast Beef Atoms saw action on two fronts last week. On Wednesday night they travelled to Newcastle and came home with a 6-4 victory. Goal scorers were Scott Prescott with five goals and Steve Simpson getting the other Orono tally.-Assisting'.on the goals were Steven Mitchell, Stew Simpson, Greg Stacey and Kevin Taylor. On Friday night these same two teams met* in Orono. This game kept both the coaches and the fans on their feet with lots of action at both ends of the arena. After three periods of hockey the score was tied at 0-0. Don Stevens played an excellent game to get the shut-out and all team members played verv well. This series left the two teams tied for second place in the United Counties league with Orono havipg one game in hand over Newcastle. The Roast Beef squad play again at home this Friday against Millbrook at 7.15 and at Bewdley on'Saturday at 12.00 noon. PLAY CONTINUE TO IMPROVE The Orono Oshawa Crane OMHA Atoms' play continue to improve game after game. On January 16th they played to a 1-1 tie with Uxbridge with Peter Bolton, scoring the Orono goal. Jeff Mitchell played a fine gamq,in the Orono nets. On January 18th the Atoms travelled to Ops and played well for two periods only to lose the game, 3-1. J.D. Urbanic scored the lone Orono goal. Stephen Sawyer was selected the player of the game. - On January 21st the local club again took to the ice and hosted Stouffville in a losing cause, 7-4. This, however, represents a substantial improvement as Orono was defeated in their previous game with Stoüffville, the top club in the Atom division, 13-1. Goal scorers were Eddy King,'Don Doxtator, J.D. Urbanic and David Groskoff. Assists went to Peter Bolton, Rodney Armstrong, Eddy King, Bob Hutton. J. D. Urbanic was selected player of the game. Eddy King also turned in a fine strong game. On January 25th Orono Oshawa Crane played Ajax iÿ Ajax coming home with a win, 1-0. Petêr Bolton scored the winning goal with assist to J. D. Urbanic. Jeff Mitchell •played an excellent game to get the shut-out. Peter Bolton Was selected player of the game however it was a good team effort which produced the win. , BAD LUCK AROUND NET RESULTS IN LOSS The Orono Pee,Wee Flyers had to settle for a 4-2 loss with Bewdley B last week even though they had many opportunities to add to their score. The team played well but did not nave lady-luck on their side when closing in on jhe net. Steve Woods and George Popodich scored the two Orono goals with assists to Brett Johnson and Kevin West. ORONO O.M.H.A. PEEWEES ADVANCE IN PLAYOFFS AFTER THRILLING SERIES WITH OMEMEE The Orono O.M.H.A. PeçWees eliminated Omemee in the first round of OMHA play downs. On January 20th the Omemee Peewees were in town for the first game of play-offs. The visitors went out in front in the opening period with a goal and added to their lead in the first 11 second on the second period with another goaL f)uane Major then put Orono oh the scoreboard when he scored on à play with Todd Haynes. With only fifteen seconds left in the period Duane Major scored his second goal to give Orono a tie after the second period of play. In the third period Oijiémee opened the scoring with a , goal but again Orono tied the game when Robbie Talsma scored on a pass out from Duane Major. Paul Reed then put Orpno out infront,, when he scored on a play with Alan Webster. This lead came to an end in the last two minutes wheitOmemee netted the puck to again tie the score. The game then went into overtime, 10 minutes. Paul Reed netted the first overtime goal from Terry Hedges and Alan Webster. Duane Major then scored his thihd goal of the night assisted by Peter Krukkert and Dennis Klawitter. Omemee then scored_but it was too late. Paul Reed before the end of the overtime period scored his third goal of the night on a pass from Dennis Klawitter. Orono vton the game 7-5. On January Orono travelled to Omemee for the second game of the series. Although Dan Mitchell and Kevin Talsma played strong in the,.Orono goal the rest of the team could not get untracked and were defeated 4-0. As Omemee won the toss for the third game «• was played in Omemee on Saturday. The Omemee club came on strong in the opening period scoring the only gosil and picking up two more in the first part of the second. With the count 3-0 Paul Reed brought the Orono fans to life with a goal assisted by Duane Major. Omemee however added another goal to end the period at a count of 4-1 The boys came out determined at the beginning of the third period and did tie the score before the end of the period. Peter Krubkert scored the first third period goal from Duane Major. This was followed by a goal off the stick of Dennis Klawitter with assist to Duane Major and Peter Krubkert. Then Peter Krubkert added another from Paul Reed and Dennis Klawitter tieing the score at the end of the period. In the overtime period Omemee scored first but then Peter Krubkert scored his third goal of the game unassisted. The a super pass from Joe Davis to Duane Major put Major in a break-away position which he took advantage of going in to score the winning goal of the game, 6-5 and of the series. ORONO O.M.H.A. MIDGETS COMING ON STRONG WIN FIRST ROUND OF PLAYDOWNS The Orono O.M.H.A. Midgets who had a slow start this season have been showing much improvements over the past few games to the extent they have advanced to the second round in the Ontario playdowns. The local club has a five game winning record which included their last two games with Port Hope in the regular schedule and their two wins over Omemee in the first round of the playdowns. The Orono club won the Omemee series in two straight game with scores of 9-4 and 5-2. The Orono Midgets now face Minden with the first game being played in the Orono Arena tonight, Wednesday. LOCAL DRIVERS POST TWO WINS AT KAWARTHÀ Not only did two local drivers post wins aj the Kawartha on Sunday last but Frank Stacey of Orono was* trainer of both horses who both have had three wins in four starts this year. < Junior West drove Wil Lor Amy owned by Clifford Francis to a win in the third race while Gerald Robinson took his win with Mighty Mustang in the fifth race. In the same fifth race Derek Newman placed third with Bae State* Swinger. In the opening feature of the afternoon Ray Staples drove his own horse, Phil Oakie to a third place finish. ' The sixth race saw three local drivers competing with Gerald Robinson placing second with Mighty Game owned by C & W. Armstrong, Keith West fourth with Chuckie Lind and Junior West fifth with Gypsy Dance. Gerald Robinson competing at Greenwood took a first place win with Artie Frost. Lawrence Hooey's Muddy George came in second in a feature last week while Keith West drove his own horse, Hieland Champ, to a third place finish. Hobbs Senior School and the Bowmanville Senior Senior School attended a Professional Activity day at the Pines on Monday of this week. The Professional Activity day centred around community community services 'available in the community and organized to stimulate an interchange of dialogue between the teachers and those associated with the services. The latter are noted in a photo in this issue of the Orono Times. Those sitting On the panel from the community were : Betty Hamilton,Durham Region Region Health Unit, Frank McQuay. Educational consultant consultant for the school board, Judge Ben Thompson of the Family Court, Don Peebles, Educational Services, Bob Morel, Durham Region Family Family Services, Det. Sgt. White, Durham Regional Police, Gail Millar, Social Worker, Alexandra Alexandra Clinic and J. Wéber of 'the Big Brothers. Each member of the panel addressed the .teachers outlining outlining the services available through their departments. Following this presentation the meeting was opened to general questions put to the panel members. Later in the afternoon smaller groups were organized organized wi,th each panel member for further discussion, y Mr." Hugh Grant, Educational Educational Consultant for the Northumberland and Newcastle Newcastle Board of Education, stated that such professional Activity days gave the teachers teachers the opportunity to be aware of services available to meet those ' involved in providing this service personally. personally. Such programs generally generally start at nine in the morning and continue until 4.00 p.m. There are a total of eight Professional Activity days planned for the school year this year of which the Board sets the program on five. The one on Monday at the Pines was a school designed program. program. ■' Not only were teachers invited.to the activity days but so 1 were parents of students attending the Pines School. No parents appeared to show for the afternoon activities. Mr. Grant stated that the Professional Activity day at the Pines was designed for teachers of senior public schools. He also said it was a requirement that all teachers attend these courses.
