This is a significant significant number of queries when you consider that many problems problems require several hours of work to bring to a conclusion, and a few require an even greater expenditure of time. This is one reason why I am very pleased that the government government has agreed to fund riding offices in each riding in the province and has agreed to pay the salary of a full-time riding assistant. It will help all of us serve our ridings better. A number of people have called me to express concern about the recently passed seatbelt legislation and have asked that representation be made to the Minister to have the law changed. As you know, the NDP supported the seatbelt legislation. Yours sincerely, Margaret Szeker (Mrs.) Director Consumer Section TRAFFIC SAFETY TIP: * SEAT BELT SAFETY PARENTS ! The next time you take the kids out in the family car . . . think about this. What would happen to them if you had a collision, or had to make a sudden stop? Would they smash into the windshield, dashboard, or some other place in the car? Chances are they would Unless they're properly secured secured in an approved child's safety seat... or wearing seat belts. So, before you tarn the key, make sure YOU and ALL your family are properly "Belted In". G. W. Brunton Community Services Officer Queen's Park Report ported it somewhat reluctantly, reluctantly, but all the information we had indicated that wherever seatbelts were mandatory, there was a considerable reduction in the death toll and seriousness of accidents. I'm willing to accept seat- belts as an interim measüre- but not as the final answer. I feel that the government should have put a time limit on the legislation and given car manufacturers-a limited time period in which to install a number of other safety features features in cars which would make the use of seatbelts ' obsolete. My concern is that since the legislation has been passed, car manufacturers will no longer feel any obligation to produce safer cars. The NDP has received a great deal of correspondence on this issue- mostly critical. Our Caucus has this matter under continuous study. 1 doubt that our position will change, but we are certainly open to argument. I would be very interested in hearing from you regarding the seat- belt legislation. Two other pieces of legislation legislation which have created a great deal of comment in other areas of the province, do tip seem to have aroused much interest in Durham East. The two issues are the store closing legislation and the government's policy of closing hospitals in some areas of the province. I assume that the store hour land holiday closing legislation has met with everyone's approval since I haven't received any calls or letters on the subject. I have received a few comments from people opposing opposing the government's decision to close some hospitals as a means of saving money. Several people have suggested suggested that since the Wintàrio money is not being spent as quickly as the government anticipated, the surplus might be channelled into providing addition hospital services in much the same fashion as the money from the Irish Sweep- stakes is used in Ireland. That makes some sense to me, but only if we have reached a point where we either can't build cultural and recreational facilities at à greater rate than we are at present, or if the need for those services has been met.
