8- Orono Weekly Times, February 25, 1976 Hornets win in overtime In a Little NHL Tournament the Orono Hornets took a win over fylillbrook in the Consolation division with a counter in an overtime period. Warren Nichols netted three goals for Orono for his hat trick While the other goals came off thé stick of Kirk Carr. Three Orono teams in Little NHL tournament Prior to last week two Orono O.M.H.A. teams had made it to the final Little NHL Tournament to be held in Elmvale during the March school break. On Saturday the Orono O.M.H.A. Bantams made the mark to win a tournament in Newcastle which also advances them to the final series being held in Elmvale. At. this point the three Orono teams are the Bantams, the PeeWees and the Atoms. No doubt there will be a large contingent of supports in Elmvale for this event. In winning their chance in the Little NHL finals the Orono Bantams on Saturday in Newcastle first meet the- Keene entry. The win for Orono came following a scoreless overtime period and in. a shoot-out of three shots on each others net. Gary Bridger stopped the first three shots on the Orono net. Michael Mitchell became the hero for Orono with his goal in the shoot-o,ut in the Keene net giving the game to Orono 1-0. As is noted by the score thé game was a close checking feature throughout with some fine goal tending at both ends of the ice. Even the overtime period could not produce a* winner and 1 ft was necessary to result to the shoot-out. The final an deciding game in the tournament also ended in a tie after regulation time. The score stood at 2-2. The winning goal was scored at 1.13 minutes into the overtime period by Stephen Haynes who took a pass-out from David Hutton, the latter working hard to get the puck out into scoring position. David Hutton had figured in all the scoring with three assists. In this game Orono took a 2-0 lead on two goals by Ross Stutt with David Hutton assisting on the first as well as on the second along with Michael Mitchell. Millbrook then came out in the third period to tie the game at two all forcing the gam.e into overtime. PLAY HIGH SCORING GAME WITH COBOURG The Orono O.M.H.A. Bantams played a high scoring game with the Cobourg Minor Bantams on Saturday winning the game 8-6. Ren Evans scored three goals as well as collecting two assists. Pat Williams also came up with a fine game with two goals and four assists. Tom Gustar netted one goal along with three assists. Stephen Haynes netted a goal and an assist as did David Hutton and a single counter to Marcel Charland. Last Wednesday thë Bantams played an exhibition game in Colborne which ended with a final score of 2-2. Orono opened the scoring when Ross Stutt scored on g play with Stephen Haynes. In the second period Colborne tied the score only to have Marcel Charland put Orono out in front agaiji with assist to Ross Stutt and Stephen Clark. Colborne netted a single goal in the third to tie the score for' the second time. 1 The remainder of the game went scoreless, The Oronp Èantams have been playing good hockey of late winning five of their past six games with the sixth a tie. Pec Wee Flyers The Orono PeeWée Flyers went to Omemee for a two-day tournament, and played Omemee on the opening day, Saturday. This one of the best game of the season for the local boys. The game was tied at 2all until at the final four minute mark Omemee scored to-win the game 3-2, The Orono goals were scored by Ken Prescott unassisted and George Popadich from Bret Johnson and Steven Wood. On Sunday the Orono boys played Sunderland for the AHL Amateur Hockey league (CC), consolation. The local boys won this game when the win had to be decided on the number of shots on goal by each team in the final five minutes of play. At the end of regulation time the score stood at 1-1. There was no scoring in,a five minute overtime period so the win was given to the team having the most shots on their opponents goal. Orono had outshot Sunderland 2-1 and thus gained the win. The Orono goal was scored by Ken Prescott with assist to Bret Johnson. The Orono PeeWee .Flyers" lost a league game to the Newcastle "A" by a score of 6-2. Steven Wood scored from Bret Johnson while Bret Johnson also scored from Steven Graham. ORONO O.M.H.A. PEEWEES HOST WEST ROUGE On Saturday the Orono O.M.H.A. PeeWee*6 hosted the West Rouge Pee Wees for an exhibition game. Terry Hedges opened the scoring it) the first period from Steve Stec and Pete Krukkert. In the second period Paul Reed got one from , Jim Moffat and Robbie Talsma. Then John Bolton tipped one in on a pass from Paul King and Robbie Talsma. Terry Hedges and Todd Haynes then set up Robbie Talsma for a goal to end the secepd period. Robbie Talsma Opened the scoring in the third period from Paul Reed and Alan Webster while Pete Krukkert netted one from Terry Hedges and Steve Stec. Todd Haynes passed to Pete Krukkert and then to Steve Stec for the last goal of the game which went to Orono 7-0. Dan Mitchell and Kevin Talsma shared in the shut-out and Joe Davis and Duane Major played well also. Roast Beef Atoms advance to All-Ontario finals In a week-end of play-off elimination rounds the Roast Beef Atoms emerged the victors and advance to the All-Ontario Little NHL House league championship... to be held in March. Teams from forty-eight centres across Ontario Ontario have been involved in similar elimination rounds with the twelve finalists moving on. In the first game played on Saturday against Keene, the. locals came up with a strong effort to come away with a 3-1 victory. Matt Johnson opened the scoring early in game after a fine effort and strong forechecking in Keene's end. Scott Prescott set-up Randy Tennant with a pass from behind the Keene net and Randy put Orono in front by two goals. This goal was scored while Keene was shorthanded. Scott Prescott ended Orono's scoring with an unassisted goal late in the game. Sunday saw the "Beef- Eaters" up against a Newcastle Newcastle entry. The winner of this contest would advance to the finals. Blair Venoit put Orono on the scoreboard on an unassisted unassisted goal when Orono was playing a man short. Randy Tennant was set-up on a pass from Derek Newman to give Orono a 2-0 lead. Scott Prescott then added an insurance insurance goal while the "Beef- Eaters" were once again short handed. The final score Of the game was 3-0. Don Stevens played a solid game in the Orono nets in both games. On Friday night the local "Beef Eaters" hosted an entry from Bowmanville but came out on the short end of a 5-2 score. The local goals were scored by Greg Stacey and Derek Mumford with assists going to Scott Prescott and Jeff Gray. ' The Orono boys are playing outstanding hockey latejy' having lost only one game in their last six games. This week-end the team travels to Grafton where they are entered entered in a two-day Atom tournament. tournament. The next home game is this Friday night, February 27th. ' ORONO O.M.H.A. ATOMS CONTINUE TO PLAY FINE HOCKEY On Wednesday the Orono-Oshawa Crane O.M.H.A. Atoms hosted Port Hope. The local boys played an excellent game even though they lost 2-1. The Orono goal was scored by Rodney Armstrong with an assist going to Peter Bolton. J. D. Urbanic was selected the outstanding player of the game. » CRANE ATOMS PLAY WELL IN OPS TOURNIE ' The Orono Atoms dominated play ,in a game with Sh^rron outshotting their opposition 32-6. However the local boys had trouble putting the puck in the net. In the final minute of play in regulation time Orono lifted their goal tender in favour of an extra player and were able to tie the - game. Orono then went on to win the game 4-3 in overtime. J. D. Urbanic got his first hat trick of the season and Murray Dennis scored the other goal. Assists went to Rodney Armstrong, Peter Bolton, Duff Ambre and Don Doxtater, J. D. Urbanic was selected the outstanding player of the game. David Croskoff also played a fine game. In the second game of the tournie Orono boys gave an all-out effort losing 4-2 to Woodville. The game was a see-saw contest until the final three minutes when Woodville scored two unanswered goals. Scoring for Orono were Glyns Jenkins knd J. D. Urbanic; Rodney Armstrong picked up the lone assist. Jeff Mitchell played well in the Orono nets facing the sizzling shots of Woodville's star, Randy Meterel. Jeff was selected outstanding player in the game. Rodney Armstrong played a very aggressive game. The Orono boys are looking forward to meeting Woodville in the playoffs and a chance to', reverse the score. Tyke teams take all at tournament The Orono Camsport Tykes won top honours at the recent Orono Tyke Tournament while their counterpart, the New Dutch Oven Tykes won the consolation trophy. « The New Dutch Oven Tykes first met Newcastle and were defeated by a score of 1-0 with Robbie Baker scoring the Newcastle goal. As a result of this defeat the New Dutch Oven team entered the consolation round and woo this feature by defeating Grafton 4-0. Shawn Rekker netted two of the Orono goals with the other two by Jason Carleton and Jeffrey VanHaverbeke. Assists went to Steven Lycett, Blaine Bruton, Jeffery VanHaverbeke, Scott McCollough and'Davit? Little. The Orono Camsport Tykes entered the tournie with a 9-0 win over Grafton with two.goal counts going to Bradley Roberts, Paul Henry and Billy Buchanan and single goals to Eric Dreslinski, Darren Dermis and Keith Vey, In this game Bradley Roberts picked up two assists as did Randy Cowan. Other assists went to Steven Hickey,. John Cowan Paul Henry and Keith Vey. With a 3-1 \yin over Newcastle the Camsport (f - •became the top winners of the tournament. Paul He. netted two of the goals in this feature with Bradley Roberts scoring the other Keith Vey was credited with two assists and Michael Dermis and Eric Dreslinski with one each. Paul Henry was awarded the most valuable player trophy. Paul represents, the Camsport team. Shawn Calberone of Newcastle , was presented with the most valuable goalie award for the tournament. Wins silver medal at skating competition Miss Stephanie Wood of the Orono Figure Skating Club won a silver medal at the recently held Pineridge Interclub Competitions on Sunday, February 22nd. Miss Wood competed in the Juvenile Ladies category (under 12 years of age). This young skater from the Orono club is to be congratulated. Other Orono skaters placed as follows: In the Pre-Preliminary category, Kelli Buckley 9th, Jackie Wood 12th and Laura Ann Hickey 13th. In the Preliminary Ladies (under 12) Denise Mahar 9th, Donna Lowery 10th and Karen' Irwin 12th. , !n the Preliminary Men's category Peter Bolton placed fifth while Beth Gatchell placed seventh in the Pre-Novice Ladies (over 12 years of age). Congratulations to all the competitors. A good paying win - ^ Derek Newman drove Bae State Swinger to a win in the eighth race at the Kawartha on Sunday. The pay-off at the wickets was $28.50, 8.10 and 3.80.
