2--Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, March 3rd, 1976 Letters to the editor A PUZZLING MOVE Council of the Town of Newcastle took a bewildering move on Monday when they support a recommendation from their Public Works Department. It all concerns the much debated Stktion Street west of Main Street in Orono. Possibly it is better known as the old railway tracks over which now vehicular traffic travels. • At the present time a good portion of the road is owned by the Ministry of Natural Resources who a number of years ago endeavoured to unload the property with the road to the Township of Clarke. They were unsuccessful at the time. , The Town of Newcastle is now seeking ownership of this land and road which no doubt the Ministry will agree upon. There would be only one logical reason for the Town to gain ownership of this road and that would be to bring it under public ownership in the name of the Municipality with a view of making improvements, no matter how costly. If the Town is not considering making improvements to the road why seek ownership. If the road cannot be developed feasibly ' due to cost why seek ownership. The puzzle comes about when council now accepts the proposal that if they obtain ownership they will turn the land over to the Senior Citizens Lodge group. Surely this group is not in the road business nor should they be. Council must make up its mind on this road which even the school board has but out of bounds as far as school buses are concerned. It would appear that council is in plain words passing the buck but this is too important an issue to play games with. A REFRESHING CHANGE Dr. Stuart Smith, new provincial leader for the-Ontario Liberals brought forth a somewhat fresh approach in speaking to the East Durham Liberals last week. At least Smith was not totally negative throughout his speech and he did find something to agree with regarding the administering of the affairs of this province. Smith agreed there must be cut-backs in health care costs. He also made the point that cuts will mean jobs and certainly we cannot have one without the other. He also came out in support of price and wage controls. No doubt when Smith was critical of the government of Ontario in allowing health costs to get out of hand in the past few years he was on solid ground. The present condition certainly verifies this stand. Plan economics and common sense decry the cut-backs and Smith cannot but help support this move by the government. In this Smith was refreshing dwelling on the positive rather than the negative aspect of present day conditions. All to often the opposition feel they must oppose everything that comes up through the party in power. This is ridiculous for no matter whether they be Conservatives, liberals or NDPs in power they cannot be wrong one hundred percent of the time. And let us not forget these men in totla do have some sense regarding the management of our affairs. A unsupported negative view cap do a disservice to the province or the nation and at some point all must come together to give support to proper legislation. NDP leader, Ed Broadbent, we belive, does this country a disservice when he encourages labour to oppose the* present restraint controls. Surely there will be discrepancies or at least'appear to be. But these, if they exist, can be ironed out over a period of time. Even an egg doesn't hatch in a day. Stuart Cassandra's Corner The right to bear arms? Once in a while politicians come up with legislation that touches a raw nerve in the populace and jolts them out of their usual apathy of anything political. Such is the case with the new Gun Laws which £orm part of a Peace and Security package, soon to be debated in Parliament. On every street-corner and in every.» barbershop, beerparlour, bus, subway and club, in fact; wherever two .or more men happen to meet, the new gun laws are being debated and a stream of invectives hurled in the direction of Ottawa. To hear them tell it, as I did on the subway last week, Ottawa is out to emasculate every male in Canada, deny them their birthright and leave them defenceless* against invaders from outer space. The new laws (if passed) do not prevent anyone from owning a firearm, but, they do require all future purchases of guns and ammunition to be registered at the time of 'purchase. Now that's not too hard a pill to swallow - dozens of Western countries have similar regulations and their citizens still can enjoy shooting, hunting and gun collecting. Any regulatory body will admit that it is impossible to legislate a gun out of the hand of a criminal, but, at least, society can try to make it more difficult for them to obtain the weapons of their nefarious occupation. Being able to buy a shotgun Poor management by the Conservative government of Ontario is the cause of the present current crisis in health care costs, declared provincial Liberal leader, Dr. Stuart Smith. Smith was speaking to the annual meeting meeting of the East Durham . Liberals last Thursday in Oshawa when he made the statement. Dr. Stuart Smith stated that the restraints were needed to curb health care costs which had grown topsy with no guidance or direction Whatsoever Whatsoever from the Ontario government. government. He also said the hospital system in Ontario was hopeless. Something must be done to pare down the $3 billion provincial health budget, Dr. Smith agreed. But he criticized, criticized, capricious, arbitrary and often cruel" approach taken by health minister Frank Miller. The health minister's decision decision to close down entire hospitals in some towns has been destroying these communities communities by remvoing a major industry, he said. However, Dr. Smith admitted, admitted, cutting beds was the only way the government could cut down on health costs. The Conservatives, often for political purposes, had built hospitals "without taking taking into account the fact there would be plenty of beds in nearby hospitals," he said. "Naturally if those beds are there, doctors are going to put people in them and consequently consequently it costs the taxpayers a lot of money. The only way to cut costs is to cut hospital beds." POSTURING The Liberal leader saved some of his strongest criticism criticism for the New Democrats whom he accused of "Fraud" and "posturing". "They won't be honest. They go around saying we can afford a cockeyed hospital hospital system where half the province has too many beds and half the province not enough," he said. and rifle like a candy bar is a dubious priviledge, which, policemen will tell you result in more "final" solutions in a domestic quarrel and increasing mayhem on our streets. Prosejytizihg Pierre and his boys backed out of the bedrooms of the nation, and rightly so, I hope they will continue to open the gun cupboards of this country or we too will experience the nightmares of life in Detroit, Chicago and New York. TWO PETUNIAS IN AN ONION PATCH: Two attractive young women are rapidly becoming the centre of interest in Ottawa. Margaret Trudeau has shed her cocoon and ascerted herself, as an individual capable of t free'speech and thought, which sometimes is at odds with.'established protocol and tradition - 'The other young lady only arrived on the national scene a few days ago and already has set tongues a-wagging. Mss McTeer, (Joe Clark's wife) from the outset left no doubt in anybody's mind that she is an independent, freewheeling soul with strong strong opinions. Ottawa may never be the same with these two young women loose in an arena so accustomed to half-truths and plausible •«■rhetoric. More Power to you , ladies, blow down a little more dust from the grren domes and breathe a bit of iife and hope into Hie air of the nation's capital. Dear Roy : ■Quite a sermon Mr. Lyall preached in last weeks paper. Obviously from his comments he intends to lead us out of the depths of despair and mistreatment mistreatment we have been subjected to for the past 109 years. Good for him!! As for his comments regarding regarding our local Hydro and its operation, he failed to mention mention the fact that every other Utility is going through the same need for increases and in fact Orono is on a par or better than most Utilities in the Province. Furthermore as I have never seen or heard of Mr. Lyall ever attending a Hydro meeting I fail to see how he would know who says . or does what on the Commission. Commission. He should check with Ontario Hydro to see who gives them all the static over increases. And if % Mr. Lyall and his Regional government are any example of how to ' save money then we are in real trouble if they ever get into the Hydro Utilities. As for making myself heard, I am sorry but I do not have the Councillors flair for public vocalizing nor am I looking for publicity. However as Mayor Rickard or Councillor EntWisle will no doubt verify, if there is a problem or condition that needs correcting correcting in Orono they have heard from me. I make it a point of going to those who listen. I also do not take $20,000 a year from the taxpayers and then try to justify not earning it by pointing the finger at others. And as for my misunderStànd- ing Mr. Lyall, I don't think so, and it will take a lot more than elegant speeches and letters about political philosophy to change my thinking. A little constructive effort on behalf of the people who pay the hill might. As Mr. Lyall states at the conclusion of his letter, I made the comment. This I do not regret. Nor do I, Mr., Lyall, nor do I. Yours truly, Douglas Simpson. Letters to the Editor: Dear Sir ; « Could I address a letter through your paper to "Disturbed "Disturbed Gnat" who had something something to say in your paper 25,2,76 about my remarks on snow removal on Orono's Main Street? Dear Disturbed Gnat; With regards to your suggestion suggestion that I approach the Municipality to have a parking parking lot established in Orono.T would be delighted to do this--and here is how such a project could get underway. The first step would be for you to pass a petition to be signed by Orono taxpayers requesting such action and when it is completed have it presented to the Municipality to have it considered. When your petition is completed I would be only too pleased to present the document to the authorities. I would suggest that, the petition be couched in the following terms: "We taxpayers of Orono do petition the Municipality to establish an off street parking lot in Orono. We taxpayers recognize that the cost of such a prking lot would be recovered recovered from Orono users of the .parking lot." ■ ' It must be understood that if the principle subscribed to bÿ most of the Municipalitiy's Councillors, that those whe use -a çivic facility must be prepared , i to pay for the seryice, would be in effect.
