Orono Atoms advance In O.M.H.À. Playoffs The Orono O.M.H.A. Atoms by defeating Ops in a playdown .series now advance to play Woodville in the next round. The series with Ops was a close feature throughout with the total five games being necessary before Orono was declared the winner of the series. The final win came last night, Tuesday in Orono, when the local boys took a 2-1 win over Ops to give them the series with two wins and two ties. In the fifth and final game the two goals were scored by' J. D. Urbanic and Glyn Jenkins with assists to Bob Hutton, Peter Bolton and Rodney Armstrong. The local boys now face. Woodville with the first game being played in Woodville . on Friday night and a return game in Orono on Saturday night. The third game of the OronoOps series was played in Orono, March 10th with the game ending in a 0-0 tie after four periods of hockey. Jeff Mitchell recorded the shut-out displaying super goaltending. David Groskoff and Eddy King played strong defensively along with the rest of the team. Jeff Mitchell was selected player of the week. The fourth game of the series was played in Ops on Sunday, March 14 and ended in another overtime thriller with Orono winning 1-0. This evened the series at four points each. Rodney Armstrong scored the winner on a pass from David Groskoff. Jeff Mitchell played a fine game recording his fourth shutout in his last five games. Duff Hamre was selected player of the game. ATOMS WIN GRAND CHAMPIONSHIP AT UXBRIDGE Orono Atoms sponsored by, Oshawa Crane Rental won all three games in an Uxbridge tournament to bring home the championship trophy. In the first game Orono defeated Port Hope 1-0. J. D. Urbanic scored the winning goal on a perfect pass from Bob Hutton and Glyn Jenkins. Jeff Mitchell * earned the shut-out in the Orono nets. Bob Hutton was selected the player of the game. In the second game Orono defeated Port Perry 3-2. Orono fell behind 2-0 going into the third period but put on one of their patented come from behind wins. Duff Hamre started things"on a pass from Ted Oster. J, D. Urbanic' tied the game on a pass from Peter Bolton. Since the tournament rules called for the games to be awarded to the team scoring the first goal, Orono had to win the game or be eliminated. With 53 seconds remaining Orono pulled their goalie. J. D. Urbanic' •scored the winner on a pass from Peter Bolton with only 28 seconds remaining. The win was the result of excellent team play so the player of the game went,to'the whole team. The third game ended in a l : 0 victory against Beaverton. The only goal of the game was scored by Rodney Armstrong with assist gojng to Glyns Jenkins. Jeff Mitchell recorded h'is second shut-out of the tournament and his third in the last four games. PEEWEES DEFEAT NEWCASTLE PEEWEES The Orono O.M.H.A. PeeWees played an exhibition game in Newcastle on Monday night, March 8th. Orono opened the scoring at 1.27 in the first period with a goal by Paul Reed unassisted. Newcastle scored two goals in the second period before Peter Krukkert tied it up on a pass ' from Duane Major. Then Todd Haynes put Orono ahead when he blasted one from the point when Alan Webster got the face-off back to him. Jim Moffat scored the only goal in the third period, unassisted to end the , game, Orono 4, Newcastle 2. UNITED COUNTY MIDGETS On Friday, March 12th Centreton defeated Orono 5 - 4 in a playoff game that featured some good clean hockey. Goal scorers were Matthew Robinson - 2 goals, Paul Yeomans and Alan McCarthy - one each. CAMSPORT TYKES SUFFER FIRST DEFEAT The Camsport Tykes who have sailed along all season without a defeat had to face this reality when the New Dutch Oven Tykes took a win from them by a score of 1-0. Scottt Irwin scored the only and winning goal of the game for the Dutch Oven boys. NEWMAN-ROBINSON POST WINS AT THE KAWARTHA Both Derek Newman and Gerald Robinson posted wins at the Kawartha last Sunday. Newman went to the front in the opening race driving Mary Minty while Gerald Robinson took his win in the last race of the afternoon driving Arkansas , Traveller.. . Besides the win in the first race Newman*placed second in the fifth race driving Dominion Lad and third in the eighth driving Vandyke Celec. Robinson on the other hand was third in the fifth race with Chatham Chip, Glenn Tennant placed seventh with Valiant Colleen while Junior West was eighth in the 8th with Hoot Van. HILLTOP ANDERS WINS AT THÇ GREENWOOD Junior West driving his wife's horse Hilltop Anders took a win at the Greenwood last week. West also drove Homer Way to a third place finish, a horse owned by David Watkins. Gerald Robinson caught third place in a race at the Greenwood with Mighty Mus tag, a horse trained by Frank Stacey of Orono. Lawrence Hooey's horse, Muddy George was third in his event of the week. Skating Club Test Results Orono Figure Seating Club held its final Test Day of the 1975-76 season on Sunday, March 7, 1976. Don Glover, Assistant Agricultural Agricultural Representative, and Mary Tompkins, Home Economist Economist working out of the Bowmanville Office have been been and will be attending a number of assemblies at various High Schools around the County to outline the overall 4-H and Youth programs programs available through' the Ministry of Agriculture and Food. The kick off day for the 1976 Agricultural Program will be held on Wednesday, March 24th, during the March school break week at the Kirby Centennial Public School, School, just' west of Highway 35 & 115 at Kirby. The day will being at 10 a.m. 1 and be ■ completed by 3:30 p.m. Activities during the day include: a morning program of social recreation, dancing and games organized by the 1975 Durham Members' Cou-, , ncil. Prospective members and parents are asked to bring their own lunch for noon, and milk and dessert will be supplied. In the afternoon an explanation of the 4-H Club Activities carried carried out in Durham will be presented by past 4-H members members and the 1976 Agricultural Club Leaders. Registration of new and old members' in the various clubs of their choice , Will also take place, J) This year as far as clubs are concerned we are going to be presenting manÿ of the clubs we did have in 1975, plus some new and interesting possiblities for projects in 1976. Some of the project areas which will be held or could be put into a 4-H :club are : Beef, Dairy, Swine, a combined Sheep and Goat Club, Veterinary, Rabbit, Field Crops, Landscape-Gardening, Landscape-Gardening, Potato, Conservation or Forestry, Farm Management, Management, Small engines, and possiblity of a North Durham Community Club centered in the Millbrook, Bethany area which would cover a number of areas including: Beef, Dairy and Field Crops, as well as potatoes or any other possibilities for projects. We want to take this opportunity to encourage all prospective young people ranging in age- from 12 to 19, as of January 1st, 1976, to come out to 4-H Action Day at Kirby School and learn more abbut what 4-H can do for you, and what you can do for 4-H.
