Alan Webster opened the scoring in the first period on a pass from Robbie Talsma. Bowmanville scored to tie it up and then Paul Reed blasted in a pass from Robbie Talsma. Terry Hedges scored an unassisted unassisted goal to end the first period. Bowmanville scored two unanswered goals in the second and then Paul Reed scored from Alan Webster. Bowmanville scored again to end the game 4-4. . On Friday, March 19, the boys travelled to Peterboro to play their'Minor B team in the Kinsmen Arena. Duane Major opened the scoring in the first period from Todd Haynes. Paul Reed then got an unassisted goal to end the first. Peterboro opened the scoring in the second and then Dennis Klawitter got one to end the second period. Denis Klawitter opened the scoring in the third and then Duane Major got one from Dennis Klawitter. Dennis then got his third for a hat trick on a pass from Duanë Major. Paul Reed blasted in Alan Webster's pass and then Duane Major got his hat trick on a pass from Jim Moffatt to er ~e game 8 -3. Kevin Talsma and Dan .ell shared the goal duties. On Saturday the action was in the Ops Arena for a tournament. The first game put Orono against Scarboro. Peter Krukkert opened the scoring on a : pass from Duane Major and then Robbie Talsma from Alan ebster and Paul Reed ended the first period. Scarboro scored a goal in the second and added two more to take the game 3 - 2. This put Orono on the Consulation side of the Tournament. The second game was wit Ennimore. Alan Webster opened the scoring from Paul Reed. They tied it up to end the first period. And then added another in the second to take the lead. Our boys then came alive in the third period for a seven goal blast. Dennis Klawitter from Duane Major - Alan Webster from Robbie Talsma and Paul Reed - Paul Reed from Alan Webster and Robbie Talsma - Duane Major from Dennis Klawitter - Steve Stec from Peter Krukkert and Duane Major were the goals. Alan Webster got a hat trick. The game for the Consulation Trophiefe was with Lindsay and ended 5-1 for Lindsay. The Orono boys should have saved some of the goals from the previous game for this one. Dennis Klawitter got the lone Orono goal unassisted and a tired bunch of boys headed home. An active young ^Orono Skater MARI LOU POWELL Thirteen year old Mari-Lou Powell, of the Orono Figure Skating Club, has had a rather-busy, yet, successful.year with her 'skating. Mari-Lou competed in the Eastern Ontario Sectional Competitions in Ottawa - during the early part of the winter, placing 7th in Pre-Novice Ladies and 3rd in Pre-Novice Dance. This past weekend, Mari-Lou travelled to Sarnia to compete in the Western Ontario Section Open Invitational Free Skating Competition, placing 7th in her division and 6th in the Silver Interpretive. Apart from competitive skating this year, Mari-Lou has found time to successfully pass her 4th figure and at recen tests held at the Ajax Figure Skating Club she passed her 5th figure and Jr. Silver Dances. As well as a member of the Orono Skating Club, Mari-Lou also skates with the Ajax and Pickering Skating Clubs where she is coached by" Miss Suzanne Burkart. Last Friday evening at the Greenwood Greenwood local horsemen had a good night with Gerald Robinson driving to two Wins, as well as a Second place finish. Junior West also notched two second place finishes during the night, Robinson drove Waterloo N to a win in the third race. This horse is owned by Doug Allen of Orono. In the fifth race, Robinson again returned for a win this time driving Coastal Kelly, a Peterborough Peterborough horse. In the sixth race Robinson was placed second in a dead heat driving Lee's Land. ■ It became Junior West's turn in the seventh when he placed second with his wife's horse, Hilltop Anders being edged by Jeanne Pick with a winning time of 2.06. In the eighth event West again placed second driving Homer Way, a horse from the Stacey stables in Orono. Muddy George continues to notch second place in most of his races and did so again on Saturday night at the Greenwood. At the Kawartha on Sunday Gerald Robinson drove an Orono trained horse, Chatham Chip to a win in the fourth event. The horse is owned bÿ C.G. Armstrong, Peterborough and trained by Steve alien, Orono. Derek Newman made his mark in the third race with a win driving Big Bad Gene. Junior'West was sicth in the same 1 race with Peerless Miss. Orono Midgets play in Oak wood On Saturday, March 20th, the Orono O.M.H.A. Midgets travelled to Oakwood to compete in a invitational tournament. In the first game Orono took a hard 3 - 2 loss against Keswick. Greg Hickey opened the score when he backhanded a loose puck behind the surprised goalie. Ken Hutton then scored from* Hickey and Kerry Davis to give Orono a 2 -1 lead. In the last 3 and a half minutes Keswick scored two goals that gave them the victory and sent Orono to play Newcastle in the next game. In this game the local boys took the lead again on a goal by Jim Leslie with the assist to Jeff de Jonge. Newcastle then scored two goals before Ken Hutton tied it up assisted by Greg Hickey. Near the end of the third Newcastle beat goalie Ron Clapdorp for a winning score of 3 - 2. The Orono goalie played some excellent hockey and.for this Ron Clapdorp received a trophy for being the best goalie in the tournament. This Wednesday the boys will try again, for a trophy as they-host the Bob Best Memorial Tournament. Come out and support these boys. After some fifteen years the Orono Orphans took to the ice on Sunday evening in Port Hope when they played in a benefit ggme with the Port Hope Panther Old Timers. The game was in aid of the Cobourg-Port Hope Mentally Retarded. Some three hun- d" 1 were in attendance. \ e game ended in a 6 all tie with the Orphans making a comeback in the third period. At the end of the second period the Orphans were down in the score 5-1 but a real effort brought them to the tie at the end of the third. Dean West was back to his usual tricks gnd camé up with a hat trick with three goals. Eric Carleton followed with two for the pight with Gord Sturrock rounding out the Orphans scoring with a single counter. From all reports thé former Orphans had a most enjoyable enjoyable evening.
