Once again this year the Ontario Ministry of Agricul- turcand Food Will be conducting conducting the Junior Agriculturist ■Program.across the province' of Ontario. The past three years of the Program have been very successful in providing providing a number of young people who are interested in agriculture with a practical learning, experience , on a commercial farm. As a result, result, there are now a group of young people who are interested interested and capable of entering farm labour positions.' As well, the Junior Agriculturists, Agriculturists, their families and friends have developed a greater, appreciation of rural life in the food producing industry. The Program is designed to provide a practical learning experience for young people from non-farm homes, who have a serious interst in'- agriculture and who have had no experience working on a farm. As a Junior Agriculturist, the person will be placed on a selected commercial farm where he, or she will perform regular acitivities relative to that farm operation. In addition addition the Junior Agriculturist will have an opportunity to develop an appreciation of rural life through living with a farm family and through participating in the local 4-H and Junior Farmer programs and in other rural and community activities. Junior Agriculturists are to be 16 or 17 years of age and must be in good physical and mental health and to this eftd each Junior Agriculturist is required to have an examination examination by his of her faifiily doctor to certify that he or she has no major disability and is. able to withstand very rigorous, rigorous, physical and mental effort. The Junior Agriculturist Agriculturist are expected to remain on the assigned farm for the full period of the program from June 2lst till August 20thT976. Selection will be based in part on their reasons for. being interested in agriculture and their plans for further education education in a career. Host farmers âre to be engaged in farming full time. The farm is to be a commercial operation and the farmer must be interested in helping inexperienced, young young people develop the skills required on a farm. Farmers are expected to have the ability to work well with and supervise young people/and must also have suitable accommodation. ■ A Junky Agriculturist will be expected to participate in farm, activities for 12 days consecutively then have 2 consecutive days off. The normal days off period will be from after chores on Friday evening to before chores on Monday morning. A Junior Agriculturist will be assigned whereever possible to a farm with the type of enterprise or. enterprises which he or she is most interested. The duties involved will vary considerably considerably depending on the individual individual farm operation, the demonstrated ability of the Junior Agriculturist and the kind of enterprise that is found on that farm. Each Junior Agriculturist will receive receive a training allowance of $16.00 a day based on a six-day week. $6.00 of this will be provided by the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food, the host farmer will provide $5.00 per day in cash, as well as supplying room and board worth $5.00 per day. Each Junior Agriculturist will be expected to provide his or her own clothing, suitable to the activity being perform-^ ed. A pair of steel-toed work, boots are mandatory and a hard hat is desirable. This program provides provides an excellent opportunity opportunity for farmers to show urban people what modern farm operations are all about, while at the same time, helping to correct the farm labour problem during the summer months.
