8 - Orono Weekly Times, March 31, 1976 Little Britain wins Bob Best Memorial The Bob Best Memorial Midget Tournament Tournament was held last week at the Orono Arena with four teams competing in the annual event. Little Britain won the championship in the final game by a score of 6 -5 over Newcastle. ■< The Orono Midgets played in the opening game 7 - 2 thus placing themselves in the finals and Orono in the Consolation round. Jeff DeJonge opened the scoring for Orono on a play with Doug Hancock. Greg Hickey came in fot- the other Orono goal with assists to Ken Hutton' and Kerry Davis. In the second game of the tournament* Little Britain took a 5 -.4 win over Minden which then placed Little Britain and Newcastle in the final championship round and Orono and Minden in the. Consolation round. In the Consolation round Minden defeated Orono by a score of 1 - 0. The consolation Trophy was presented to Minden by Mr. Bruce Tennant. Little Britain then went on to take the Bob Best Memorial championship, with a 6-5 win over Newcastle. PeeWees see action The Orono 1.0.0.F. PeeW§g$ participated participated in the Little N.H.L. Ontario'Championship Ontario'Championship Tournament for C. and C.C. Teams in Elmvale this week. On Juesday, March 23, they played their first game at 12:00 noon agqinst Stayner. The first period there was no seeping and at 7:35 of the second period on a power play Robbie Talsma tipped in Duane Major's rebound for the first goal of the game. With just 12 seconds left in this period Stayner tied it up. Stayner scored again in the third period and our boys just couldn't get the tieing goal. With Stayner's win this put Orono in the Consulation side of the Tournament against Port Carling.at 5:00 p.m. Orono opened the scoring in the first period on a goal by Peter Krukkert from Duane Major and Dennis Klawitter. Port Carling then tied it up. Dennis Klawitter's goal from Duane Major put Orono in the lead to end the first period. Dennis Klawitter opened the, scoring in: the second from Peter Krukkert. Robbie Talsma added another from Alan Webster and Dennis Klawitter. Then, Robbie Talsma scored an unassisted goal to finish the game 5 to 1. The boys returned home to await their next game on Friday at 1 p.m-. against Elmvale for the consulation Championship. This game the .boys lost 4 to 0 and although they all played hustling hockey they just couldn't match the Elmvale squad. The Orono O.M.H.A. Pee Wee team was sponsored this year by the Orono I.O.O.F. Lodge and would like to thank them for their participation in Hockey. The team members are Dan Mitchell and Kevin Talsma - goal; Joe Davis, Jim Moffatt, Terry Hedges, Todd Haynes, defence; Peter Krukkert, Robbie Tajsma, John Bolton, Left Wing; Dennis Klawitter, Paul Reed, Paul King, Right Wing; Duane Major, Alan Webster, Steve Stec, Centres. Coaches - Gary Cooper, Len Klawitter. Manager - Russ Major. The boys played the Oshawa Hornets Major PeeWee team in the Harmon Park Arena in Oshaw on Saturday and lost 7-0. Receive Wintario grant for trophies The Orono Amateur Athletic Association has received a sum of $365.00 from Wintario. The money was alloted to the Orono organization to purchase trophies for local teams and players. In an application to Wintario the Association had asked'for a sum of $9,000.00 of which the major,'part would have been applied aginst the'cost of repairs at the arena. The eighth race was won by Bride To Bea, in a time of 2,07.3. Newman took his win in the fourth race driving Dominion Lad with a time of 2.11.1. Junior West Driving at the Mohawk took a first place win with the Dave Watkins-Frank Stacey horse, Homer Way. He also placed second with his wife's horse Hilltop Anders. Muddy .George continues to be up in the finishes, again placipg second in his race. The horse is owned by Lawrence Hooey of Orono. CLOSING OF ARENA DELAYED The Orono arena was to close on the week-end of April 4th but this has been extended until April 11th at this time. The extention was due to the fact that the Orono Atoms are still in the playoffs for the Zone Championship having recently eliminated Woodville. The Orono team must now await the winners of the Beaverton-Minden ; series which could continue until the end of this week. Mr. John Moffatt, manager of the 1964-65 Orono Midgets, makes the presentation of the Bob Best Memorial Trophy to Little Britain captain, Bob Waldin following Little Brit ain winning the Bob Best Memorial Tournament at the Orono Arena last week. The tournament is an annual event in Orono in memory of Bob Best who was drowned in the spring of 1965.
