Water meters must be installed in Orono The Town of Newcastle, council on Monday deleted from a finance committee report a section relating to water meters for the Village of Orono water system. The finance committee had recommended that the .Regional .Regional Public Works Department Department be advised that from the point of view of residents of Orono the installation of water meters is not necessary and this expenditure be deleted at an estimated saving of $8,200 in 1976. The total cost of the project according to Çounc. Allin would be $41,000 spread over a period of five years Council also deleted -'a section in the report to not paint the name Bowmanville on the Bowmanville Water Tower this year. In the matter of water meters for Orono Mayor Rickard said it was necessary to have the water meters if the Region was to 'have' a regional water charge. He recommended that the cost of . the water meters should not be treated as a capital cost, 'but rather as up-dating as the later Would become a charge over, the entire region rather than on the water users in Orono only. Mayor Rickard ; also supported the painting of Bowmanville on the Bowmanville Bowmanville water tower and the . insertion of some valves in the water system in the Village of Newcastle. He stated that the whole system, has to be turned off in Newcastle to make any re- • pairs. He also pointed out that the system had been turned off in Newcastle when a fire call was received and if water had been needed it would not have been under pressure. Council in tabling the water ; meter matter are now to further discuss the matter with the Region in an effort to have such costs rolled into the over expenditures for the Region. HOME AND SCHOOL FUN FAIR The Orono Home and School Association are holding a Fun "'air at the Orono Public'School on April 22nd from the hour of 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. All proceeds from this venture will go towards the purchase of outdoor gym equipment. The first call came Saturday when the department was called to the Osborne property on the eighth line for a grass fire. It was a busy week-end in the Village of Orono starting Saturday with the Skating Carnival, Masonic Ladies' Night in the Church and the wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. John Boyd in the Oddfellow's Hall. This activity continued on Sunday with another performance of the skating club in the afternoon and the final Orono Jamboree in the Town Hall. NO DEFICIT CHARGED AGAINST ORONO The Town of Newcastle Council on Monday night approved a recommendation that a $8200.00 charged against the Police Village of Orono at the time of the take over by Regional government be consumed in the general budget of the Town. In 1974 it, had been the decision that this amount would be charged directly against taxpayers in the Police Village. At the time former Orono Policé Trustees had 'aimed that no deficit, to their knowledge, did exist. A _ umber of discussions have been held since 1974 with the end result that there will be no direct charge to the Village taxpayers. Orono Arena. On both Satur- was filled to capacity for the day and Sunday the arena excellent show. * Orono Masonic Lodge holds ladies' night Over 140 perform in annual carnival On Saturday evening, Orono Orono Lodge honoured their ladies at their annual Ladies' Night. Despite the skating carnival which kept several away, over 115 masons, wives and guests filled the basement basement of Orono United Church to enjoy an evening of food, music and an excellent slide show. After being greeted at the door by the Worshipful Master,' Master,' Tom Henderson, and his wife Margaret and the Junior Warden, Bob Rosseau and his wife, Joyce, the guests were served a sumptuous roast beef dinner by the local Kinette Club. Following this, Wor Brother Edward Mil- Ison, light-heartedly introduced introduced the head table, consisting consisting of the officers of the Lodge, their- wives and Rt. Wor. Bro. Wilbur Dickinson, current District Deputy Grand Grand Master, and his wife, Marie. ' ■ Wor. Bro. ( Continued on page 3 ) Petitioners want road improvements The'Orono Figure Skating ' Club on Saturday evening and Sqnday afternoon presented another 'spectacular on ice'. With over one hundred and forty local children, juniors and seniors performing, with fine music and colourful costumes the event was most successful and interesting one.... Decorations set the tone for -the spectaeular with hundreds hundreds of coloured lights at almost,ice level around the, perimeter of the ice surface. Hours upon hours had also been spent in covering the ice boards with charaetery. This set the atmosphere for Oro- no's Musical Showtime. The young skaters have always been a delight at the ice carnival and this year was no exception. ' With Music from Sesame Street, and the Candyman and beautiful costumes costumes these jfoungsters were a real hit with Musical 'Vibrations, the Happy singers, singers, Candyman and the Yellow Yellow Submarines. The Gesters and Raindrops also played their part in the evening's entertainment and were given given plenty of applause during their performances. The young male skaters came into their own with a number entitled the Tramps. In total twenty-four young boys entertained in the number number with a good twist to thé theme. The Black and White group as well as the Purple- People Eaters and the Intermediates Intermediates on Parade all came in, for praise as they perform - èd their'numbers on the ice. The Sugar Shack number was- also a colourful affair with good imagination and drill for the skaters. Memories Memories of Rock and Roll with gorgeous girls and groovy guys took one back a few years. -In this number the young promising skaters were were able to display their skills on the ice as the remainder of the group kept time with the music. Not soon to he forgotten * (Continued on page 3) A copy of a letter to the Ministry of the Environment was received by Town Coun <cil on Monday night in which some eleven petitioners referred referred to the condition of the sideroad from the seventh road to the eighth line road, just east of the Ski Hill. It was pointed out in the letter that the road is seriuosly affected by a pond Which has been constructed well above the road level. The letter claims, seepage from the banks of the pond reaches the road surface making it impossible to maintain this section of the sideroad. The letter further stated that it was the opinion of adjacent lot holders using this road that this condition of the road cannot be improved until the level of this pond is corrected or the pond removed. removed.
