fi--Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, April 7th, 1976 Orono & Beaverton deadlocked in series Orono opened series in Beaverton Friday, April 2nd, defeating hometowner 4 - 3 in a close game. Goal scorers for Orono were Duff Hamre 2, J. D. Urbanic and Don Doxtà ter. Assists went to Ted Osier. Peter Bolton 2, and Eddy King. Player of the game went to Jeff Mitchell who played outstanding in goal and Duff Hamre. Orono lost the 2nd game before a packed crowd at home Sunday April 4th - 3 - 1. It was a hard fought game that could have gone either way , and only a few bad breaks kept the locals from their second victory. The Orono goal Was scored on a pass from Ted Oster and Peter Bolton put it in the net. Peter Bolton was picked player of the game for his fine two way play. Jeff Mitchell was again an outstanding goalie. The whole team are to be congratulated for their excellent team play. The 3rd game will be • played in Beaverton, Friday, April 9th at 7 p.m. with the 4th game at home on Sunday April 11th at 4:30p.m. The boys are hoping for lots of. support in their bid for an O.M.H.A. Championship. Roast Beef Atoms lose to Pelham On Friday, March 26, the Mr. Roast Beef Atoms came up against a 'select' team of 'House League' Atoms for the 'All Ontario House League Championship' in the 'C' division. Scott Prescott scored the only 2 goals for the locals in the 5 - 2 loss. The Beef-eaters played well, but, were outclassed by a team made' up of the best players from 4 teams. This fget was revealed to the coaches by one of the. tournament conveners, ■ The Beef-eaters closed out their season by hosting a team from Ops on Friday, April 2nd, The local boys put together a fine effort and came away with a 3 -1 win. This same Ops team eliminated tfie Beef-eaters from a recent tournament by, 4 blanking them 2-0. the win with a time of 2.09.03. The win came with Leo's Dominion. Gerald Robinson took second place in .the same race driving Skooter with Russ Powell of Newcastle fifth driving Lasco Pasco. Derek Newman took second in the opening race with WhitefaCe Grace. In the same event Ray Staples placed eighth with Phil Oakie. The win went to Candidly with a winning time of 2.10.L In the second race Junior West finished fifth with Hoot Van. Gerald Robinson placed third in the fifth,,, with Our Lad with Derek Newman fifth with Bae State Swinger. The win went to Terry Jeans Boyd with a time of 2.08.1. Robinson also entered in the eighth race was sixth with Sesame Pick. Mayor's view of tax increases Orono scoring came all in the 2nd period off the sticks 'of Billy Storsbergen, Scott Richards and Randy Tennant: Assists went to Steve Merrick, Greg Philips,.Matt Johnson and Derek Mumford. All the boys played well in this game and it resulted in a very entertaining hockey game. The players and coaches of the Mr. Roast Beef Atoms would like to express their appreciation to all the people who supported the team through-out this past winter. Thank you. Orono O.M.H.A, PeeWees active On Friday, April 2, the Orono O.M.H.A. PeeWees hosted Newcastle for an exhibition exhibition game. Robbie Talsma opened the scoring in the first from a pass by John Bolton, Newcastle tied it up with 2.55 left in the first period and then got the go ahead goal in the second. Then Duanè Major got one from Dennis Klawitter to tie it up again. With just 19 seconds left in the game Newcastle scored again to win the game 3 - 2. On Saturday afternoon the boys travelled travelled to Bowmanville to play the Minor PeeWees 'a game. The game ended in a scoreless tie with Dan Mitchell and Kevin Talsma getting the shut out and the rest of the boys playing excellent hockey. On Sunday the team, along with some of the fathers, took in the Toros game at the Maple Leaf Gardens. ONE ORONO DRIVER AND ONE ORONO HORSE WIN AT KAWARTHA Last Saturday evening at the Kawartha Raceway Margot's Gem owned by Lawrence Hooey of Orono took the win in the third rage with a time of 2.11. Junior West placed fourth in the same race driving Laura Barmiur while Derek Newman was eighth with Glen Tennant's Valiant Colleen. In the sixth race Junior West drove to The treasurer of the Town of Newcastle upon request from council submitted a report concerning tax increases increases both by the Region and the Board of Education. The report showed an overall 26.133 percent increase increase in the education levy for the Town and a 19.382 percent increase for the Region. During the discussion Mayor Mayor Rickard pointed out thast" although the Region increase was noted as 19.382 percent it was in fact less than 11 percent. He pointed out that the Region uses only 1975 assessment figures in making the comparison and this does not give a true picture. He pointed out that when the 1976 assessment actual figures are used to levy taxes in the Town, the increase will be somewhere around the 11 percent. He also said this was true of the Board of education figure and that the percentage percentage increase in that area should also be lower for taxpayers in the Town of Newcastle. The Mayor said it whs almost impossible for anyone to know at this time the actual •ncrease that will come out on the tax bill. Council did pass a motion to meet with the school board over their increase in taxation. taxation.
