Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, April 14th. : Athletic winner Mr, Floyd Nicholson of Orono was the winner of the Orono Amateur Athletic benefit benefit draw held last Saturday evening following their annual annual banquet. Sales for the annual banquet were somewhat somewhat down this year over previous years with 165 tickets tickets being sold- Mr. Nicholson being the top winner received a sum of $200.00. Mr. Ted* Deriet being .the second last name to be drawn from the drum received $10.00. Other, winners during the draw were: Alma Cuttell, Jim Murree, Maria Opoka, Irene Brandt, Betty Mercer, Roy Sawyer, Joyce Tennant and Glenda Sherwin, The banquet was held in the basement of the Orono United. Church with the Orono Skating Skating club catering to a delicious delicious dinner. The elimination draw was held in the Orohb Durham County Senior Citizens Citizens Lodge, A petition was presented to the Town from some 70 petitioners from Orono and area opposed to the move to turn this portion of road to the Senior Citizens Lodge. The meeting will be attend ed by members of the Public -.'Works Committee, the director director of Public Works, Mr. J. Dunham, representatives of the petitioners, representatives representatives of the Durham County Town Hail. , The Association wishes to thank all those who supported the bànquet as well as Rev. B. Long and M.C. Stirling Mather, Mather, citizen» compiex west of the Village of Orono for over a period of two years. The site is situated on the old dump site. Station Street, west ol Orono Main Street is under a number of ownerships betwe en the Town, the railway and the Ministry of Natural Resources. Resources. The Town dqes own a section just west from Main Street. Some petitioners have expressed expressed the view that the Senior Citizens Lodge if they own a portion of the road have no obligation to keep it open to public traffic. The road has yet to be termed a municipal road and the Town does not own all the presently travelled travelled section. This was increased to 15 tons as sales began to come in and again increased to ,18 tons last week.Proceeds from the sale will go towards support of the i, Vs activities and Cystic Fibrosis. The 18 tons amoynts to Hot) forty pound bags to'deliver. ' ' POST OFFICE CLOSED GOOD FRIDAY The Orono Post Office will be closed on Good Friday. Regular hours will continue on Saturday and Monday. BUSY SATURDAY FOR FIRE FIGHTERS. The Orono based fire department had a total of six calls last Saturday, including one house fire in Kendal, four grass fires and a fire in a bulldozer. The department made two calls to the Phillips property, north-east of Orono, due to. grass and post fire apd a call afso for grass to the Kendal Recreation area when some young outdoorsmen were having a cook-out. A grass fire north of Kendal was answered by Bowmanville due to the fact, that Orono was at the time out on a call. The department also answered a call in Orono where battery cables had shorted in-a bulldozer owned by Mr. Don Tennant. • The local fire department points out tha t a fire per mit is needed to burn grass or rubbish. Such permits have been hard to get of late due to the danger of grass fires. In speaking at the meeting Mr. Moffatt said there was no contradiction between the stated NDP policy of trying to make the minority government work and the 24 students An amendment prqposed by ■ W. H. Carman at the recent Board of Education meeting has set a minimum enrolment of 24 pupils for the french immersion classes. The amendment amendment carried over a proposal proposal from the french committee committee asking that the minimum minimum enrolment for a class be twenty students. Mr. Carman in presenting his amendment pointed out there was a considerable drop-out in some of the classes citing the Bowmanville Bowmanville class which started the first of the year with 32 student and now having 27. Moffatt said the NDP had no choice than to support a non-confidence motion due to the fact that the Ontario government had turned over the authority to the federal Anti-Inflation Board to review the salaries of Ontario, public servants. He sâid this move by Ontario gave the federal government control over program^ in Ontario. Stephen Lewis praised the work by Mr. Moffatt in the legislature and stated that he was a model NDP member at Queen's Park. He also praised Moffatt for his relentless efforts tin the radioactive problem in Port Hope. The Orono fire department received a fire call to Kendal on Saturday, evening at 9.40 p.m. when it was,reported the Jackson house was on fire south'of the ball' park! The department spent the next three hours in bringing the blaze under control. The back sectitin of the frame house 'was' destroyfed however the rerhainder of the house was saved' by the local department. The supply of water to fight the : fire was pumped from the creek some 1500 feet from thfe house using the auxiliary pumper. The tanker truck was also sent to the fire from Bowmanville and assisted in control of the fire. . Mr. G. Duvall stated that the department did an excellent excellent job in containing the fire • in the -back portion of the building,. The house has been vacant for a good number of years. The cause of the fire is not ' known.
