As these fish make their way to traditional spawning grounds, Ministry of Natural Resources Conservation Conservation Officers work around the clock to ensure that the poacher's net does not interrupt their journey. Lindsay District Conservation Officers already report that numerous charges have been laid against those who would take fish illegally during their spawning run. The fishing season for trout in these waters opens April 24 this year. Smelt from Lake Ontario also run up these prime trout streams and this presents an additional problem. While it is legal to fish for smelt in Lake Ontario, it is an offence to' engage in such netting activity "north of the lake," that is, in those trout streams. Smelt fishermen are therefore cautioned to confine their fishing to the Lake as failure to comply with this regulation can lead to charges under the Ontario Fishery regulations.
