2 - Qrono Weekly Times, Wednesday, April 28,1976- Second Class Mail Registration Number 6368 Published every Wednesday at the office of Publication Roy C. Forrester, Editor Rick Patterson, Advertising Manager SOUNDJUDGEMENT The Northumberland and Newcastle Board of education used good judgement when they decided that Remembrance Day would be a regular school day rather than a holiday. The reasoning behind the move was to the effect that with school programs on November 11th the day would have greater meaning than if it were simply declared a school holiday, Certainly if the day is to be given meaning for students the best opportunity to reach this audience is in the school. It is here that at least the student can be made aware of the meaning of Remembrance Day. It would hardly make an impression with November 11th a holiday. It may well be that other such days could be given more meaning by similar legislation. It is somewhat curious however that the Board did have to come up with another holiday to replace the one being lost for November Uth. Building drops off in Town of Newcastle Development in Newcastle in the first three months of this year dropped drastically to less than half of 1975 activity for the same period. Statistics released Monday by H. G. Wight, the town's cheif building inspector, show the value of building permits issued up until the end of March this year was only $972,398 compared to $1,665,591 for the same period in 1975. And while building permits issued by the town in March were worth $664,672, it was a drop of 51 per cent from March, 1975. The decrease in the number of actual permits issued for WILL GAIN LITTLE GENERAL SUPPORT Labour leaders are now considering a general one-day strike protesting against anti-inflation legislation, legislation which they have been bitterly opposed to. They also believe that such a strike could now be organized and held and are waiting to see the results of the Ontario Federation of Labour demonstration at Queen's Paik on Wednesday, today. It not likely that such a strike will endear the labour movement with the general public. If was certainly borne out in the Toronto teacher strike that the teachers did not gain the favour of the public and in fact lost some of their credibility. The same will exist if labour shows its strength in Strike action against the anti-inflation legislation. In a recent interview on television one Quebec teacher stated that the profession had lost their civil rights because the Provincial government had taken from them the right to strike. But it must be considered that there does exist other rights which also must be considered.. Every child has a democratic right to lx- educated, every individùal has the similar right to hospital care When required. There are rights to lines of communication, transportation and public services which when disrupted eliminated democratic rights of thousands upon thousands. Surely there becomes a time when the rights of the majority must take precident. The teacher, the nurse, the air controller or who ever has always the right to leave the job and try elsewhere. Perhaps Ed S'chreyer's Premier of Manitoba, may have something worthwhile to consider in his proposal to narrow thegap between thé highest and lowest paid people. He claims the highest paid 'people 1 ' in industry 'and government should be, paid no more than 2% times the lowest paid worker. To put such a scheme-into practice may be something elsé in Canada but it is this wide range which has made it necessary to establish anti-inflation curbs. When it all boils down does it take more physical and , mental output at the executive level than on the production line. We doubt it. But it is fact that we have put full value on knowledge and continue to pay the piper. Now that spring is here, one of the most ancient and international of pastimes is out for its annual airing. Look up almost anywhere there is a field and you will find bright adventurous kits darting and soaring across the deep blue skies. But wait a minute .... there are hazards today which didn't bother kite fliers through earlier ages. Local and provincial Hydro utilities warn that unless special precautions are taken, taken, accidents or even a tragedy can happen as à result of flying kites without caution. One fatality occurred for instance when a kiter riding his bicycle on a country road steered his high-flying toy into an overhead electric wire. The electricity quickly ran through the coppexized kite line to ground and killed the young hobbyist. Metallic lines are being used more and more frequently frequently and they are dangerous. When these lines come in contact with electric power lines there is a very good chance of a serious accident. Every year Hydro authorities authorities find it necessary to repéat the ■ warnings about flying' kites in the vicinity of power lines. Don't.
