Over 150attend Orono fair banquet The Durham Central Agricultural Agricultural Society held thèir annual banquet' last week in 'the basement of the Orono United Church and if attendance attendance at 'the affair is any ' indication of interest in the Society it should auger well 1 for the future of the fair held annually in Orono. Over one hundred and fifty were in attendance for the delicious banquet served by the ladies of the Orono United Church. Further to the banquet a period of entertainment was. r supplied through a sing-song conducted by Mr. Don Staples and a number of selections by the popular Country Four. Quartette along with Mrs. . Gladys Brown playing some piano numbers. Mr. Leroy Brown of Lindsay was the ! guest speaker for the evening. Mr. Jim Rickard, president of the fair board, made a few announcements noting that the fair this year would include a new class of beef cattle with Charlais holding their show at the fair. He further announced that 1976 would see the return of the Queen of the Fair contest being sponsored by Mayor Rickard of the Town of Newcastle. 1 He also stated that arrangements had been completed for an appearance of the Gordie Tapp show both Saturday afternoon and for the Saturday night dance. Mr. Leroy Brown, a former resident of the Orono area and more recently the Agricultural Agricultural representative for Victoria County, outlined the early history of agricultural societies and fairs in the area dating back to 1875 when a joint fair was held on a County basis between Peterborough, Peterborough, Port Hope, Cobourg and Lindsay. He did state he was not too familiar with local activities^! the Durhain Cêntral Fair but was a member of Lindsay Fair Board. The Lindsay fair, he Said operated under its own banner since 1883. Various games throughout the school created considerable interest for especially the students. Games included a hockey game, ball throw, fish pond, a fortune tellers booth & Professor's Professor's Derek's (Newman) magical show. The entire school for a period of some two hours was turned into a real sideshow. In speaking of agricultural fairs in general Mr. Brown pointed to the important part played by women in the organization. He said, "don't let this support down," and do make good use of their talents. He said the societies must also support the young people in such organizations as 4-H clubs and schools. You must encourage the young to be part of the organization and appoint some junior directors for they are the back-bone of the fair for the future.
