Find little favor with education proposal The Northumberland Newcastle Newcastle Board of education held a special meeting last Wednesday to discuss a proposed restructuring of the local educational system as presented by Donald King to the county of Northumberland. Northumberland. Thé meeting came to no decision over the proposed changes as only ten of the sixteen members were present present for the discussion. It was pointed out at the meeting that Mr. King had not called for any input from the board regarding even their present operation. Ron Cook of the board of education also said that the King study lacked any indepth study of education and displayed no idea of the mechanics involved involved in tlie operating df the system, Mr. Ring had proposed that the educational system needs to be under a municipal council and that 'this would allow education to be considered considered with other priorities. He proposed that the education education system come under the jurisdiction of the county council. He further proposes, that county council form an educa : tional committee composed of councillors. Trustee William Carman called Mr. King's , proposal nothing more than "a bunch of garbage". He claimed there was nothing in the proposal relating'to the quality quality of education, "which is the paramount issue". Mr. Carman Carman also said that it had been his experience, that councillors councillors and trustees have little in common until such time as tax time. A brief presented by the administration stated that some of the'recommendations by King would require a change in the British North America Act. Mrs. Bradley from the Public Health Unit feels that a definite need exists there. An (effort will be made to find volunteers and the next S.P.C. meeting will be held in Orono Town Hall on May 20, 1976 at 8 p.m. to further this important project. Other S.P.C. projects discussed discussed were the setting up of a volunteer action centre, starting a United Way funding funding program for the Town of Newcastle, and completion of a Social Services' Directory for the Town.
