8--Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, May 19th, 1976 « «■iiglii -- Town Council Briefs Newcastle makes bid for Senior citizens Mr. Keith Barr, member of the Newcastle and District Chamber of Commerce made a bid on Monday to Newcastle Town council for the establishment establishment of a senior citizens housing program in the Village. Village. Mr. Barr said he was speaking on behalf of both the Chamber and the Newcastle Lions Club. In outlining his case to council he stated. that Newcastle Newcastle had an excellent site, had full services and that the Chamber had taken part in a recent survey conducted by the Town regarding senior citizen housing. After some discussion Mayor Rickard and Counc. Lyall were appointed as a committee from council to meet with representatives from the Chamber and the Lions Club to consider the matter. Following his presentation to council Mr. Barr pointed out that a sum of money was available following the demise demise of the former Durham County Health Services and that this money was now held by the Durham County Senior Citizens Organization for the establishment of senior citizen citizen accommodation. He said the Durham group was considering considering a location in Orono but he would like council to be aware and others that Newcastle Newcastle was also interested in such a development in the Village. It was expected that this report could influence the decision of the Town of Newcastle regarding regarding its policy decision towards towards a new Community and functions such as banquets, banquets, dances and meetings. Suggestion was also made of securing a portion of the Orono Public School grounds for the location of the arena. This matter is also being followed up by the local group.
