6--Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, May 26th, 1976 Clarke High School Athletes Excel in Lake.Ontario meet Athletes from the Clarke High School excelled at the recent Lake Ontario , Secondary School Association track and . field meet held at Civic Fields in Oshawa. The contingent from Clarke took second place with 324 points. The meet was won by Dunbarton with 366 points. O'Neill Collegiate from Oshawa was third with 293 points followed by Uxbridge and Oshawa Catholic with 248 points each. Fourteen other schools competed in the competitions. competitions. Ten records were broken during the meet and three new events had marks established. One of the finest individual performances performances came from a Clarke athlete, Sylvia Rugger who set a record in the midget girl's 800 metres with a time of 2.26.42, and then produced a new standard in the midget 1500 metres (5.01.19) and the senior girls open 3000metres (11.1,4.77). Other record breakers included Andrey Dewitt, Clarke with a new mark in ,the Junior girlsj 1500 metres (5.22.92), Ron Potter set the midget boy's shot put record at 15.53 m., and John Lempen also of Clarke who set a record of 4.53.41 in the open 1500 steeplechase. Clarke athletes set or broke records in seven of the 14 events. Other Clarke placements were as follows: Pat Burnes third in midget girls 200 emtre, Pat Barnes second in midget girls long jumo; Lori Clark third in the Local play grounds to open July 5th Planning has been completed as far as the promotion of some twenty-five playgrounds throughout the Town of Newcastle this summer. Included in the playgrounds are those in Orono, Kendal, Brownsdale and Newcastle Village. The Orono playground will operate as others in the Town for a period of seven weeks during the summer. • All playgrounds playgrounds open on the week of July 5th, In Orono the July 5th program will start in the morning and alternate to afternoons on alternate weeks. The Kendal playground operates every afternoon as does the One in Newcastle. The Brownsdale effort con- tindes with morning programs while in Newfonville they alternate between afternoon afternoon and morning on an alternating weekly basis. LOBB Ball popular throughout Newcastl e Some twenty-six teams of LOBB ball has been organized in the Town of » , Newcastle for this coming summer with an equal number of teams for men and ladies. There are thirteen men's teams organized which is three more than last year. Six men's teams will operate out of Orono with the Kinsmen, M&M Variety, Jive Turkeys, Flyers, Carman Plumbing and Orono Team Six. . There are also thirteen to fourteen teams for ladies and the league will consist of teams not only from Orono but from Bowmanville, Kendal, Newcastle and Newtonville. ' In speaking to Joe Caruariri he points out the problem with finding enough playing fields for the various and numerous teams. Well it looks like a good year for those who enjoy LOBB ball. Orono teams in ball and socçer Orono this year have youth teams . entered in both baseball, softball and Soccer. It is expected that an Orono Atom junior 200 m ; Janet Lovekin third in the junior 800 m hurdles ; Roberta Phoenix fourth m junior high jump; Janet Lovekin third in junior shot put ; Janet Lovekin first in the long jump; Kathy Talsma fourth in discus and Teresa Ciesielski second in the javelin throw. In Senior Girls competition Julie Payne was third in the 100m hurdles, Marlene Gilbank fourth in the same event; Kari Hills third in the high jump; Alida Becker second in shot put; Alida Becker and Julie Heaslip third in discus throw; Audrey Dewitt third in open 3000m. In Midget boys Marcel Charland placed third in the 300m hurdles; Ron Potter first in shot.put. In Junior boys Bob Davis was third in the 400m ; Milan Popadich third in 1500 in ; Carl Lowery second in 110m hurdles; Calvin Allin fourth in same event; Carl Lowery first in the 300m, Calvin Allin second; and Tom Moffat third; Ijn the Junior boys Ron Clapdorp fifth in the triple jump. In Senior boys Jim Brennan was third in the 100m ; Brd Hillis first in 1500m and John Lempen fourth in the same event; Jim Brennan first in 110m hurdles; John Lempen first in 1500m steeplechase; Brd Hillis first in 800m and Joe Carev fourth; John Lempen third in the 300m; John Cornish third in open 400m hurdles; John Cornish second in shot put. Clarke was third in the 400m relay as well as being third in the,open 1600m relay. Baseball team will play in a league with Bowmanville and Newcastle while a similar PeeWee team will play in a league with Bowmanville, Kendal, Newcastle and Port Hope. Girls from the community have formed a local softball team and will -lay in a league with Newcastle, Hampton and Bowmanville. In Soccer Orono has also entered a i team to play in a league with Newcastle, Bowmanville and Tyrone. Derek Newman wins two at Kawartha Last Thursday at the Kawartha raceway Derek Newman, a local driver, came up with two wins at the Kawartha. Gerald Robinson, also on Thursday evening posted a win. Derek Newman driving Meadow Chrivan in the Second race took the win with a winning time of 2.07.3. Junior West in the same race finished third with Lilli Mac Ann. In |he sixth race Newman drove his own horse WilLor Ben winning with a time of 2.07. This was the horse's second win this year in five starts. Gerald Robinson placed first with a time of 2.06.2 in the eighth race driving Lee's Land. He also placed fifth with Arkansas Traveller. Junior West drove Terina C to a third place finish in the third and finished fifth in the seventh with Famed Yankee. The win in the later race went to Bride to Bea in a time of 2.03.4. Saturday night Gord Robinson was third with Scarlet Dares, Gord Irwin Jr. sixth with Place Mat and Keith West sixth with Hilltop Class. In the fifth race Gerald Robinson drove the Doug Allen horse, Waterloo N to a second place finish. The win went to Armbro Norval in a time of 2.06.4. Playing in finals with Houston Aeros ' H- Steven West has been called up by 4 the Houston Aeros for the playoffs and has been playing in the final series with Winnipeg. Steven assisted on one,of the goals for the Aeros in the opening game with Winnipeg. Rainbows not / ^ affected by PCB The Ministry of Natural Resources has placed ban on commercial fishing for coho and chinook salmon in Lake jHuron, Erie and Ontario due to high levels of polychlorinated polychlorinated biphenyls. The Ministry is satisfied that PCB levels are sufficiently in excess of the tentative guideline of two parts per million to warrant the closing. Moves are also being made to close the fishery for eels and channel catfish in Lake Ontario for the same reason. The Ministry advises that only occasional 'meals of: these fish should be eaten, riot more than one meal per week. They also warn that women who are pregnant should not eat any such fish. Ministry biologists have stated that they are somewhat somewhat surprised that tests on rainbow trout from the Gan-, araska River, sampled in the fall of 1975, were almost all below the two part per million level. Over 54,000 tour GM plant More than 54,000 people visited General Motors of Canada plants in Oshawa during open house last week. "Despite the unfavourable weather conditions," said Don Sandrod, a GM official, "the open house was: most successful", The plants' 54,704 visitors included some from as far away as Newfoundland, Manitoba Manitoba and Saskatchewan, he said. These included people visiting the area and other picking up cars at.the plants. "We had senior citizen groups from Peterborough and Lindsay, bus loads of students from' a 50 mile radius; but a majority were: our employees and their families and friends and other Oshawa people," he said.
