Roy Mercer a brother and by Wor. Bro. Roy Winter a brother of Bro. Harvey Winter. Bro. Harry (Pete) Mercer was initiated into Orono Lodge on May 11, 1922 while Bro. Harvey Winter was initiated into Orono Lodge on Oct. 30, 1925. Bro. Winter is a retired school teacher. His career started at Cowanville when he was only 17 years old. From there, he moved to Oshawa and subsequently to Toronto where at age fifty he was forced into an early retirement retirement by ill health. He now resides in Oshawa and enjoys gardening and • is a very capable tiarpenter. Bro. Mercer is still active with his garage business and has been at the same location since 1921. Harry has been active in community affairs for many years serving as a Polie Trustee for 18 years and a member of the Orono Hydro Electric Commission for 15 years.- Sports and mechanics have helped fill Harry's time. He is married with four sons, Bruce, Ross, Don and Jack and one daughter Greta. A huge crowd was in attendance to witness the presentations and to renew old friendships. Mr. H. I THREE FROM ORONO GRADUATE FROM DURHAM Three students from Orono Were amongst the graduates from Durham College last week when convocation was held in the Oshawa Civic Auditorium. Those graduating from Orono were Kathleen Gustar, Lynn Lowery and Deborah Simpson. Ken Eastabrook from Newtonville and John Mèszaros, Kim Perrin, Patricia Powell and Lilly Woo from Newcastle were also graduates. ONE FIRE CALL FOR BURNING CAR The Orono department had one fire call over the week that to a car on fire. The call was received on Sunday . DO NOT WAIT FOR MEETING On Monday the Town of Newcastle had called a meeting of the Planning Advisory Committee for 7.00 p.m. in the Court House and another meeting, committee of the yhole, for 7.30 p.m. at which all members of council are asked to attend. Counc. Entwisle being chairman of the planning committee as well as Counc. Allin were held up at the committee meeting. Counc. Lyall and Counc. Hobbs waiting at the old Town Hall left before the adjournment of the planning committee meeting. The committee of the whole started an hour late without Counc. Hobbs and Lyall. A most successful annual spimg show was staged by ... the,Oropo .Horticultural Society Society last Thursday evening. There was a large increase in the number of entries over previous spring shows and the quality of the exhibits was excellent. Tulips, of course, were the featured attraction and it would be difficult to imagine that better specimens specimens could be found anywhere anywhere than those presented for competition in this show. Entries in the other categories categories of spring flowers and arrangements were well diversified diversified and added interest and beauty to the range of exhibits. , President, Mrs. Joan Couv- ier, presided at the meeting and welcomed the new members members and guests. Following a short business session, Mrs. Gladys Brown played appro- - priate springtime music and what more appropriate on this occasion than the oldtime favourite "Tip-toe through the tulips", played with a light-hearted touch and gay spontaneity. For further entertainment entertainment and; at the same time reviving many fond memories, the president, assisted assisted by Everett Brown,' showed a series of slides that had been taken during the 50th Anniversary year of the Society. Mr. and Mrs. Russell Van Horne were the judges and both commented most favourably favourably on the number and high quality of the exhibits.
