PROBLEMS WITH REBUILDING ORONOSTORE ( Continued from page 1) ment will be present. In the first instance there was a problem to gain Town of Newcastle building permits for the rebuilding of the building but this has been . ironed out with building permits now available. It ha'si been stated that an approach to the health department by the Mayor has not changed the department's mind. Mr. Lycett points out that even a holding tank would not be approved even though these are in operation in a number of areas in the business section. He also points out that a one-story building in amongst two story buildings would be out of character as well as financially financially not so feasible. < The Times in contacting the department of health on Monday stated they would submit no information until the meeting in Orono on Wednesday evening. V,V,V,W/V/V///V-V Suggest Camp Borden for dump site Environment Minster George George Kerr last week stated upon questioning by M.P.P. Doug Moffatt that Camp Borden, a Canadian Forces base near Barrie lould be a possible site for radioactive landfill taken out of the Town of Port " Hope.- He further stated that progress was being made in the operation to clean-up Port Hope and that it was the responsibility of the federal government to find a site for the contaminated soil. It has been reported that Maj. Alan Terry-senior duty officer at Camp Borden was unaware of any intention 'to use the camp as a. landfill site for the radioactive soil, nor that there was any intention to close down the camp. Orono Weekly Times, June 2, 1976 Keen competition in IDEAS. ART I local orienteering On Sunday, May 30th the 9th annual Clarke-Ganaraska Orienteering Meet was held ■ at the Cold Spring Camp in the Ganaraska Forest, This meet was one of several, to be held in various areas to determine the finalists to compete in the world championship championship with the National team in Britian. Attending this meet were various clubs from Niagara Falls, Hamilton and Toronto areas as well as Clarke. Lars Carlson, the director of the meet, started the Clarke Club in '1967. At that time the membership was made up of Clarke High School students. As the sport became more familiar and with more people taking an interest a community club was formed. For those who are unfamiliar unfamiliar with this sport, I shall try to explain some of the basic fundamentals. The people are broken down into several categories starting at white to yellow-orange - to red to blue depending on experience and age. The runners leave at one minute intervals. They receive receive an orienteering map of the area and proceed to a master map which shows their course which they in turn plot on their own map. They also receive a control sheet which describes the area immediately around the control station as well 9s duck check points : Upon réàttW-ng the chtick point you punch your card in the appropriate space with a specially coded punch which is fastened to each control station. I might add they are all different. This is also used at the end when calaborating the winner along with the time. If you miss one of these you are disqualified. ' . While you are running the course you have to follow the contours and other symbols on your map, this combined with the use of a compass and nothing else leads you to the next control station. Upon reaching this you have to re-orienate your compass and map for the next control station or check point. In the white category, which I followed, you could depend mainly on a foot path or road. However, in the blue category, you had no paths or roads to follow, you were completely at the mercy of the rough terrain around you. Crossing streams, marshes and other obstacles like steep ravines and dense forest areas. This type of course is planned only for the competitive competitive Orienteers.
