Electronic mosquito repel lers ineffective "Consumers should check carefully before spending money for electronic mosquito mosquito repellers," Sidney Handle- man, i Ontario minister of consumer and commercial relations, warned today. Research conducted by the University of Toronto's department department of microbiology and parasitology finds no basis to assume that mosquitoes are affected by the sound waves sent out by devices which are now marketed in Ontario. The U of T findings confirm those studies in Russia and the United States. Mr. Handleman said that some manufacturers "are' attempting to 'cash in' on recent reports that ençephal- itis-carrying mosquitotis could spread to southern Ontario this summer." The manufacturers manufacturers of the pocket-sized gadgets gadgets claim the devices emit a sound which repels female (biting) mosquitoes and are effective over a range of nine to. 12 feet. The U.S. Environmental Environmental Protection Agency found that "no protection was afforded against the landings and bites of these insects." Net surplus shown in budget report ORONO, ONT. 4. H.
