The company must aiso submit proposals for alternative alternative handling of residues from Port Hope refinery by Oct. 1 and discontinue by Oct. 31 further disposal of liquid and soluble nitrates in the area. It will also have to complete by Dec. l a more precise study of the impact on Lake Ontario water quality of toxic contaminants released from the residue area. ■ AECB information officer Carl Mayhew said the board was acting on the advice of its radioactive waste safety advisory advisory committee and its own staff. Both agreed that the Port Granby site be discontinued. discontinued. NO HAZARD However, the committee repeated the claim that no public health or safety hazard appears to exist and the belief that no measurable impairment impairment to Lake Ontario water quality has occured. "It would seem to me that is effectively sounds the death- knell of any further dumping >{ radioactive wastes in the Port Hope or Port Granby areas, or for that matter, anywhere along the shores of Lake Ontario or any other ' large or important water body. One wonders why such a decision wasn't made and enforced some time ago, but perhaps we can now mhke up for lost time. "I think it is also important to note that t.he decision, while it- rules out a radioactive radioactive dump at Port Granby, does not rule out the site for erection* of a new refinery on that site, and I am continuing to press the Minister for a speed-up of that decision". Mr. Bud Fanning, director of recreation for the Town states it may be one or two weeks before the reports are submitted to his department and at this time he has no idea what they may contain. The Orono arena has been standing for over 50 years while the other two have life terms of around 25 years. The Orono Amateur Athletic Athletic Association have been promoting a new arena for the Village and only last week . the Durham Central Agricultural Agricultural Society gave their appro va! to have the building constructed on their lands in Orono. The hew proposed building would accommodate not only the arena but be used for the annual fair as an, exhibit building as well as having a community room for dancing and banquets. Council in Uxbridge are now to decide on whether to repair the present arena or to build a new ong. The decision is expected following further investigation by the engineering engineering firm. v SUTTON Tilting Arbor Bench Saw Comes complote with see-through blade guard, ,J 0-45 degree blade tilt, fence guard bar, adjustable combination combination square and stand.
