2--Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, July 21st. 197« Orono Utoklji THE MUNICIPALITY MUST BE INVOLVED With the great probability that the Orono Arena will be closed by the Ministry of Labour many questions are now being asked concerning the future of a new arena in Orono. One thing is certain .. . the Town must become involved both financially and as the key administrative body. , Much has already been done towards a new building to house an ice surface in. Orono even to the point that agreement has been reached with' the Durham Central Agricultural Society that such a building would be permitted on their lands in the heart of the Village. Plans and prices for ' a logical building for this cdmmunity have also been given local approval. Initiative and direction from the municipality is now all that is really needed To think for one moment that the local Athletic Association will be able to raise sufficient funds and arrive at an agreement with the Agricultural Society would be fool hardy. The municipality must be the link between the two groups. There should be no thought that the citizens of this community can or should through private contributions . replace the existing building.. Local citizens are already assisting in the financing of the Darlington Sports Centre. They will also assist in therenovations required both in Newcastle and Bowman ville. Why should they be expected to dig deeper in their pockets to solely finance an arena in Orono. We await the direction of council with its initiative. Kendal News We have just enjoyed a perfect week end without a storm. So many severe storms storms seem to have come on the week end this year. Many of us spent Saturday afternoon watching the opening of the Olympic games on the television television from Montreal. On Friday Evening July 9 a shower was held at the home of Mrs. Allen Foster for the bride-to-be Miss Monica Manning. Manning. A pleasant evening was enjoyed by the many gu.es ts and Monica received many beautiful gifts. Mr. and Mrs. Don Cathcart, Karen and her girl friend Joanne Wybenga are motoring motoring to the prairie provinces. Mrs. R. Elliott spent the week end with her son Neil and family at Maple Leaf while* Reg went farther north to fish. Mrs. Alva Swarbrick has been visiting a few days with Miss Catherine Stewart. Mrs. Elinore Foster has been entertaining her sister and two daughters from Virginia and North Carolina. Mr. and Mrs. Don Cochrane, Cochrane, Mr. and Mrs. G. Cathcart and Mr. and Mrs. G. Mr. and Mrs. Don Cochrane, Cochrane, Mr. and Mrs. G. Cathcart and Mr. A. Thompson Thompson were Sunday dinner guests with Mrs. H. Lowery of Kirby. On Monday July 12, a bus load from Kendal went to the Century Village at Lang ten miles south of Peterborough. This is a wonderful setting for ' a pioneer village with the log cabins in a park like setting and Indian River winding past from the Hope Sawmill in the north to the Lang flour and grist mill in the south, with no modern sky scrapers or factories to spoil the effect of a village one hundred years ago. Y^e visited the Hope Saw Mill .first. Wé saw where .the miller and his family had LETTER TO EDITOR Could I comment through your Letters to the Editor on a recent "hush hush" meeting held in Newcastle concerning the Port Granby, Eldorado and Port Hope nuclear plant and nuclear waste situation. I have no complaint about,, meetings - anyone can hold a meetihg if they wish - my complaint and what is annoying annoying me is a petition blank that was handed out at this meeting in an effort to have the people attending the gathering pass the petition to be signed by the public. Here is tne content oi tne blank petition - and I have a copy of it in case anyone is interested in verifying the facts: "We, the undersigned being .ratepayers of the Town of Newcastle, hereby petition Eldorado Nuclear Limited and the Minister of Energy, Mines and Resources to locate both the Port Hope landfilll at Port Granby and a refinery plant. The fill should be located under the following conditions : 1. that a . new dumping location away from the lake be used. 2. that a technically suitable method of storage is used.. 3. that the federal government government or its crown corporation corporation pay a dumping fee based on the number of yards of fill to be placed at the site. This grant would be placed in a trust fund to build a new sports complex complex in the Town of Newcastle. 4. that the federal government government pay an annua} licensing fee. Said grant to be usèd to pay part of the community centre operating cost. In thé . event Eldorado Nuclear Limited and the Ministry of Energy, Mines and Resources do not place the fill at Port Granby we feel our community should rec-. eive the refinery. We petition Eldorado Nuclear Limited to pay a cash grant, in lieu of land as part of a developers agreement. Said grant to be used for a sports complex. End of petition. As far as I am concerned this blank petition is a contemptible bribe where Newcastle people would reap benefits from the misery of Port Granby people. This petition puts neighbour against against neighbour, it is a despicable despicable bit of business and does not deserve the consideration of fair minded people. I am informed that during thp meeting the Save Environment Environment from Atomic Pollution Pollution that is fighting the Port Granby dump and the refinery refinery took quite a pounding from the organizers of the gathering. To this, I reply SEAP does not hold "hush hush" meetings, our meetings meetings are public and everyone is welcome. We cater to no political party of political minded individuals, our efforts efforts lie in the direction of trying to avoid the possibility of having any part of the Town of Newcastle becoming an atomic waste dump or a site for a- nuclear refinery. This We believe is in the interest of anyone, » save perhaps, real estate promoters. The writer has been called a radical by some people. To this I reply, if standing firm on what one believes in is to be a radical, then they are right. ;. ' ■ ' : Mrs. B. Boisvert, Newtonville. E.R.
