Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, August 1th, 1976 A fire early Saturday morning morning destroyed the barn on the farm of Mr. Howard Payne, R.R. 3 Newcastle. Up to the present time the cause of the $100,000 bfn/e is not known. The fire was first observed by Mr. Payne as flames shot up from the back of the barn. Fire departments from Newcastle, Newcastle, Bowmanville and Port Hope answered the call. Some 4000 bales of hay and 2000 bales of straw as well as two elevators were lost in the fire. No cattle were destroy- .ed. The Finance Committee for the Town of Newcastle passed the holding of the meetings and have requested that the Regional Finance Committee make available necessary staff members to answer ■ al) questions which , may be proposed at the meeting. ( Continued on page 3) A METEOR SIGHTING Early last Sunday morning in the back yard your editor sighted what, might be called a meteor or shooting star v i came out of the north and travelled across the full -extent of the sky to the south. It took some ten to fifteen ' seconds' for the flight. The meteor was in four parts with the front segment being the largest. Two other segments appeared on either side of the front Segment with a fourth segment trailing some distance behind the main group. It was an uncommon sight for this viewer leaving a trail àt least half the distance across the.sky. , REBUILDING UNDERWAY . ■ Mr. Hoerst Hoensch, Orono Building Contractor, has started work on the rebuilding of the former Reid Hardware store in the business section of Orono. The property was destroyed by fire in 1974 arid since has been an item 'of controversy as to its appearance and safety. Mr. Hoensch has purchased the property and is now taking down the main portion of the fire-destroyed structure including the two end walls. Following the cleanup Mr. Hoensch will rebuild the structure for two stores' on • the main floor and two apartments on the second level. Permits were granted for the structure following approval by the Department of Health of a satisfactory sewage system, Aerorbie. GUIDED WALKING TOUR OF ORONO ' This Saturday the Newcastle Game comes to Orono with a guided walking tour of the Village. The event mmencesat lO.OOa.m. at the Clarke Museum. Everyone is 'invited to attend and to bring camera and sketchpad. A picnic will be held on the museum lawp following the walk with lemonade and tables being provided.
