O R T S RECREATION GIRLS SOFTBALL In the game played July 19th the Bowmanville 2 defeated Bowmanville 4 by a 15 to 6 count: The top hitters for Bowmanville 2 were Jo Anne Richard a home run and two singles, Suzanne Vint a home run and two singles, Andrea Girardi two hits,' while Wendy Luxton, Chris Doyle, Diedra Lob, Sharyn Manuel had singles. ■ The hitters for Bowmanville 4 were Jill Hockin a home run and single while Cheryl Brooks, Hiedi Devries and Darlene Todish one hit each. The game played July 22 Hampton defeated Bowmanville 4 by a 16 to 1 score.The hitters for Hampton were Charlene Dallas with three hits, Lee Ann White two hits, Lori Cook a single and a home run, Jennifer Jarvis, Kelly Martin- dale two home runs, Heather Mundy and Carol Beavis one hit each. The hitters for Bowmanville 4 were Georgia Todish and Darlene Todish one hit each. HARNESS RACING AT KAWARTHA Last Tuesday evening Keith West posted his second win in the past two races with his own horse Hieland .Expo. It was the sixth start this year for'the young horse who won the race in a time of 2.08.2. * Also on Tuesday Frank Conlin drove to a third place finish with Chuckle Lind in the sixth race. Doug Allen's horse, Glory AI took a fourth place finish in the second race driven by Doug Brown. Saturday evening in the tenth race Junioi West drove Aramac Egan to the win. The horse is owned by Frank Stacey of Orono. In the seventh race Frank Conlin took the win with Big Time Bill in 2.11. In the same race Lilli MacAnn, recently purchased by Joanne Swadron and John Slater, finished in sixth place after two prior wins at the Kawartha in the past two weeks. Keith West came in for a second place finish in the eighth race driving Sun Brier Bob, owned by Ross Boyd of Newcastle. The win went to Naio Futurity in 2.07.1. Russ Powell of Newcastle drove Lasco Pasco to a second place finish in the sixth race With Gord Robinson of Newtonville finishing fourth with Olde Soft Shoe. In the fifth race Doug Allen's horse Waterloo N was at the wire in fifth place followed by Junior West in sixth driving Willoway Gay. The Kendal club completed the tournament undefeated gaining gaining momentum with every game. Their final victory in the event came within five innings as they took a commanding lead over the Oshawa Intermediates, 12-1. Ralph Kennedy was on the mound for Kendal in this feature. The Eagles then faced Bowmanville and behind the pitching of eric Moore came in for another win this time by the score of 5-1. In the third game it took Kendal 10 innings to break a 4-4 deadlock and come out the winners 6-4. Michaeil Carman pitched the full ten innings for the Kendal crew. The win was over Oshawa. The host club Little Britain then became the next opposition opposition for the Eagles and again behind the pitching of Eric Moore and Michael Carman took a 7-4 decision. In tlier final game Ralph Kennedy again took tto the mound for Kendal giving up only three hits to the Oshawa club. This effort was supported supported by a two-run homer by Steve West as well as a double and a single. Bill Robinson came in for a triple and three single, Bill McCullough a triple and two singles, Pete Henderson two , single and - other hits to Bruce Aldred, R. Kennedy, Jerry Thompson and Fraser Wallace. The Kendal crew found themselves out in front 12-1 over Oshawa in the game after the fifth inning at which time the win was called for Kendal. Michael Carman came in for a fine day with ten strike outs in his ten inning game. Pitching for Kendal was a contributing factor towards their victory as was the hitting of most of the club members. * The Kendal club is having one of its finest seasons in the past few years. The Ministry of Labour in a letter to the Town of Newcastle Newcastle has asked that additional additional information be provided to the Ministry concerning the Newcastle Village arena. The letter contained the following "The report (Leighton (Leighton and Kidd) describes the structure, except for minor discrepancies in the roof joist, to be adequate for the regional loadings and their combinations while the attached attached sketch creates the impression that the structure is of "HipeT ' type construction construction and greatly inadequate in its bolted connections. We have furthermore experienced experienced great inadequacies' of numerous of such structures in the wind bracing, the anchorage of the ' column bases with respect to horizontal horizontal thrust forces and generally , non-compliance with. the CSA 086-1970 Standard. This, of course, could have all been rectified as some previous time, however, there was no mention of any such repairs in ' the report, and we suggest strongly that your Structural Consultants review their calculations calculations in conjunction With the present condition of this building." The letter listed a number of items of additional information information needed by the Minis-» try which information they would like to receive as soon as possible but not later than September 15th, 1976. ARENA TO BE MADE SOUND In a letter" to thé Town of Newcastle from the Ministry of Labour it was poihted out that the Bowmanville Arena did not comply with the requirements of the Industrial Safety. Act and that: it was a source of danger or hazard to persons employed therein or having access thereto. . The Ministry directed that the arena be made structurally structurally adequate in accordance with recommendations and that the direction be complied witli by October 15th, 1976. The letter also called for the discontinued use of the arena until the directive is complied with. , , The arena however may be used from April 15th to October 15th, 1976 subject to a written statement signed by a professional engineer suitably qualified in the structural field is submitted to the Ministry of Labour assuring that the arena structure, is capable of safety.
