Word was received on Monday that the dance had been cancelled since it had been unable to relocate the activity in the immediate area. In speaking with Tom Berry he pointed out that it was not possible to hold the dance ei ther at the Newcastle Hall ah it has been booked or at Brownsdale as _it is too small. As a result the promotion which is an annual affair of the Great Pine Ridge Kinsmen Club has been ' totally cancelled. According to Mr, Berry a 'large crowd was expected as sortie one hundred couples had already purchased tickets tickets for the event. Money is being refunded to those already already made purchases. Such parties are to contact their sellers for the refund. it is also, understood that similar conditions will exist for other dancing activities in the arena providing no remedial remedial repairs are made in the immediate future, if such arc possible and if undertaken. . Mr. Berry said they would now have to wait until next year for this event. . Last Friday afternoon a meeting called and chaired by Mr. Doug Moffatt,' MPP for Durham East, was well attended being held in the present Orono arena and attended by members of the Agricultural Society, Orono Amateur Athletic Association, Association, members of : council, representatives of the engineering engineering firm of Leighton and Kidd as well as provinicial government representatives. The chief concern of the meeting was the holding of the 1976 edition of the Durham . Central Fair in Orono as well as the construction of a new arena in the community. The meeting stemmed from a closing order of the Arena building received by the Fair Board on July 29th from the occupational safety branch of the Ministry of Labour. Mayor Rickard pointed out that it was the responsibility of the Town to call for the inspection of the building and as such \yere Concerned over thé results of the inspeption. He pointed to the present position of the fair board due to the fact that the annual fair _was to 'be held in early September. He suggested the possibility of reinforcing the building so that the board could make use of it for the annual event. ■The Agricultural Society are to consider bracing of the building as a possibility of using the arena for the fair. This failing, and it must be approved as well by the Ministry of Labour, the board would make use of large tents for the inside exhibits. The possibility of using a bubble to encompass the present building building was also mentioned at the meeting but not considered due to possible damage and vandalism, as well as high cost of some $22,000 a year. In the matter of grants for a new building it was pointed out that if the Agricultural Society was to .build the structure a maximum grant • of $48,000 would be available from the Ministry of Agriculture Agriculture and Food. Other grants would not be ava" . u to the Society as ■ uy w< ■ ! for the Municipality. If thy. Municipality were to undertake the construction of an • arena and community -, centre complex a total grant of $150,000 would be available from the Ministry of Recreation Recreation along with a one-third grant from Wintario which in the case of a $542,000 complex would amount to approximat ely $133,000. With these two grants the remainder of $266,000 would have to come from the municipality or a combination of public subscription subscription and muneipgl funds. It was pointed out at the ( Continued on page 3) National Trot Record The Orono Amateur Athletic Association held a meeting on Sunday evening when the topic for discussion was the winter program related to hockey, after some discussion a motion was passed that the Association would carry-on with the regular program with the possibility of ice time being available in other centres in'the Town of Newcastle. The problem for the local Association arises from the fact that thte Orono Arena has been declared unsafe for public use. A committee of the Athletic Association has been set-up to meet with the Recreation Department for -the Town of Newcastle to make arrangements for ice time'in one of the three existing arenas or at all three, Newcastle Village, Darlington and Bowmanvillé. , , In speaking with Mr. Fanning he said that time-would be made available in the three arenas for the Orono group but that at this time no details had been settled. He said it was quite possible that cuts would have to be made in the program of the other centres. Portia Lobell owned by John Hobey of Orono trotted to an impressive victory in the feature of the Grand Circuit harness 'racing at Vernon Downs, New York on August 4th. 1 , i The winner, Portia Lobell, was clocked in 1:59.4 to equal the National season record for 3 year old trotters set by Ambro Regina on July 22nd.
