STUTT Southern Ontario weather this year makes one think of England cool and wet. The roses and flower garden at every home are beautiful. Gardens have an over abundance abundance of cabbages, beets, carrots, and etc. Gardeners tell me they have more pests this year, they have had to spary for black aphids, blight etc. One farmer who sells beautiful tomatoes told me he had ten acres of them and he was hoping they wouldn't get an early frost like last year. Can your tomatoes early as they have more vitamins than later ones. There is more sunshine in August. That's why the early tomatoes taste so good. Mrs. M. Stevens, her daughter daughter Mrs. Geo. Hamilton and children Beth and Leah of Yarmouth N.S., Mrs. E. Foster, Mrs. G. Cathcart and Miss C. Stewart were entertained entertained to 'afternoon tea on Friday, August 13th at the home of Mrs. Ron Frank north of Newtonville. It was the first time we had visited Mrs. Frank in her home. We are delighted to see her well again able to care for her home and family after many weeks spent in Western Hospital, Toronto. We were glad to welcome Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Rans- berry to the Sunday morning service at Kendal church. Rev. Aubrey Tizzard chose as the topic of his sermon "A Continuing Testimony". The scripture reading was Hebrews Hebrews 11, verse 1-16 "Abel being dead yet speaketh". We too shall pass away, We shall go on living by example. "They rest from their labours labours but their works follow them". The greatest influence influence for good comes to use from the One born in Bethlehem. Bethlehem. The great paintings and records left by historians speak to generations yet: unborn. Their influence is left on the world. "O come to my hbart Lord Jesus. There is boom in my heart for Thee". On August 28th at ten a.m. a bus driven by a local man but paid for by a Provincial grant will leave Kendal Church to tour the historical sites around the village of Kendal ^endjng, up at the Orono Museum where lemon aid will be served. Better bring your lunch along. The history of Kendal has its roots in the year 1688 when King James 11 abdicated the English throne and fled to France. The British parliament parliament sent for his married daughter Mary to come and rule England. She was married married to William of Orange in Holland. They invited her husband to come also. He said, "I will come if I can be joint ruler with my wife Mary and bring an army with me". Agreed. One of his command- „ ers was a Carscadden. He was given a castle in Scotland and an estate. Later there was trouble in Ireland so the King of England decided to settle a great many Scottish farmers in Northern Ireland. One of these was a Carscadden. Carscadden. * About the year 1831 the Catholics of Southern Ireland burned Robert Carscadden's barn and he decided to come to Canada with his wife Flora ■ Deam six of his sons and two daughters. One son said he would go to United States and another son John decided to get married and come in a couple of years. They were twenty-four weeks on the Ocean. Imagine the taste of water kept in a barrel for that long and the smell of chickens brought along. Contrary winds blew them almost back and their mother Flora Dean died and was wrapped in the Union Jack and buried at sea. • They came to Crooked Creek, there the road ended in 1833. They blazed the trees to the sixth line and built a log cabin where the tobacco kilns stood but couldn't get water. Then they moved down to the creeks west of K en dal and built their home where the Kendal Provincial Park is today with its hills and creeks and ponds. Mrs. Edna Winn and daughter daughter Berneice of Orillia visited Mr. Fred Winn and Mr. and Mrs. G. Cathcart on Supday. ■' Call your <. licensed Plumbing and Mechanical Contractor who sells, installs - and guarantees CARMAN Plumbing and Heating Phone 983-5207 Orono -*wrr--, Don't leave It to Chance Be sure your home is truly protected by a good policy Call us now Millson Insurance Agency Office: Corner of Church and Cobbledick Street 983-5032 YOU AND YOUR RESTFUL ' COLORS-! - WATSON'S Marine and Cycle Orono Phone 983-5343 -Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, August 18th, 1976 Up & Down the Book Stacks Thursday, August 19th. 1976 Janosch (reworked fairy- ADULT At the foot of Dragon Hill by Florence Murray M.D. (the story of a woman doctor in Manchuria) Adlai Stevenson of Illinois 1 by John Martin (biography) Nature Photgraphy simplified simplified by Edna Bennett The Complete Book of, Fruits and Vegetables by F, Bian- chini (a superbly illustrated book) Making Ends Meet by Barbara Barbara Howaf (novel of today's woman) Prize Stories 1976 the O.
