2--Orono Weekly Times', Wednesday,August 25th, 1976 Up to Provinces Premier Davis of Ontario prior to Edmonton premier's conference made the statement that the federal government had failed to its nation building and that it was up to the province to take a progressive approach to talks on bringing the 1867 British North America Act home to Canada. Premier Davis was quick to cite some of the federal shortcomings and the problems facing Canada today which in part may be a fault of the federal government. He cited the row over the bilingual air traffic control in Quebec and the gulf between organized labour and the rest of the country as a sign; that national unity is a pressing problem. No doubt Premier Davis is correct to say the federal government has not been successful in its 'undertakings but any form of government is only as good as those who elect them. The premier of Ontario could hardly champion the case of the provinces above that of the federal government for the provinces have yet to show an united front in bringing the BN A act back to Canada. , The unity of this country fs dependent on all forms of government and all individuals and no one individual or group can ever succeed without the full cooperation of everyone. "A Work of Love" In the Foreword to the history book, "Out of the Mists" Mr. Rutherford refers to the years of Work by Mrs. Helen Schmid as a work of love. This is borne out throughout the pages of the book when one considers the time involved for, a busy housewife and mother. Mr. Rutherford points out the many tediuos hours of labour by Mrs. Schmid in ferreting out much of the material which could have no meaning without careful research and verification. The book, "Out of the Mists", is a tremendous undertaking and both Mrs. Schmid and Mr. Rutherford who assisted are to be congratulated. Of course there are others who in their own way assisted with the book by providing information and documents as well as Miss Elva Reid who started the ball rolling for the publication. In the Foreword Mr. Rutherford states that "Out of the Mists" is not a competitor or supplement to the Professor Squair book published in 1927. "Rather we have written "Out of the Mists' to impose a new viewpoint on Clarke's history. We realize its shortcomings, but there is much that appears here that has never been.written about the Township and its residents before. Although a history, to be accurate, must sometimes bore the writer and the reader alike with detail, we have attempted to break thks monotony with anecdotes of human interest that are as close: to the event as we can make them." » ■ ' * Again we'can only say "congratulations" for a job well done in the interest of this.community. The book should be a part of every personal library for it touches almost every family in the area of some years past. Unrepresentative , A news release last week revealed that a contract agreement giving Durham road, sewer and water labourers and increase of $2.15 an hour over two years had been approved by a vote of the Union members. It was also reported that 25 members of a 250 member local had voted and that of the 25, sixteen gave their approval while nine voted against the settlement. These figures with only ten percent voting is hardly a representative view oft the total union members hwere the great majority stayed at home and showed no interest in the settlement of the contract. If this is representative of all Unions it leaves a great deal of control in the hands of a few as being the same would be true of the leaders they elect. It would appear that such is the case and this does not auger well for Unions throughout the nation. The Post Office strike last year was intimated to be a similar example of a few making the decisions for , the total membership. Members, it was reported, were afraid to speak out and.take a stand. This is unfortunate for the Unions and for the country as a whole. Radicals and power seekers would have" no problem in gaining control and almost making their own decisions law in the association. In speaking to a few members of the U.A.W. representing workers at GM we asked if they expected a strike this year. All those asked the question said they hoped not. When asked if they would be voting on any question relabel to the contract or strike action the majority said they fetl they would not be voting. This is a poor reaction of Union members in the organization which has full authority at tjne bargaining table. It is quite obvious that Unions have an internal problem and one which they should first correct.. Members must first feel free to take any stand they wish and must express their view in the ballot box. 1 Letters to the Editor ONE PARENT FAMILY Attendance Awards? "Councillor Ivan Hobbs wins the attendance prize for assiduity in his Newcastle Town Council work missing only five meetings in the twelve month period of 1976- 1975 and in the year 1974." This statement was made in a news release over the past week-end by Councillor Kenneth Kenneth E. Lyall. According to Councillor Lyall, mention was made by Mayor Garnet Rickard concerning concerning the subject of Town Councillor's attendance at Town meetings in a recent letter to the editor printed in a local paper. "So I determined that it was about time to check into the subject to see what the truth of the situation was." Records gleaned from Council Council agendas and minutes indicate that , Councillor Hobbs representing Ward 2 Bowmanville, missed 4 meetings meetings in the 1976-1975 twelve month and missed one meeting meeting in 1974. Poorest record of attendance attendance was scored by Mayor Garnet Rickard who missed 14 meetings in the 1976-1975 period and missed a' further 14 meetings in 1974. Councillor Councillor Kirk Entwisle had the dubious honor of holding the second worst attendance record record by failing to attend 27 meetings in the same time span. Following is the attendance records for all Council members members : Councillor Don Allin missed 21 meetings, Councillor Ann Cowman was absent for 13 meetings, Councillor Hobbs missed 5 meetings, Councillor Lyall missed 12 meetings, Councillor Tink missed , 18 meetings and Mayor Rickard missed 28 meetings. "I believe that the attendance attendance of Councillors at Town meetings is important - that is why Councillors are elected to office by the electorate." Mr. Lyall said. "As Mayor Rickard Rickard brought the matter up in his letter to the paper, I figured that it would be fain.to set the record straight." Mr. Lyall conclùded. Ken says, "they can look after themselves". They won't make a lawful! road or maintain the old C.N.R. track and they own it. No entrance from Estates only Tapnton Road. Your life is at stake to cross 35 Hwy. When 35 Hwy. was being built, I met John Foote, M.P.P., and the Engineer in charge. I tried to persuade them to build a clover leaf at AF Habbs, a natural spot at, the time. They laughed, and assured me it would never be necessary. Parking is getting impossible, with trucks • backing into stores and stopping in front, plus no parking signs.'Were do people go to shop? The merchants can blame themselves, themselves, because they don't fill the shoes, that their fathers and grandfathers possessed. This includes others as well. What about the clock at the Town Hall that was donated to the village? There was a meeting a month ago, rè Hamlets.,How many residents turned out? About ten. A meeting last spring, re closing inlets to Orono. Somerville Drive and one to Taunton' Road by government. Aleck Moffat, Fred Yeo, Dop Evans' and. about six from the estates were present.
