The Morgan can be shown as a roadster, a stock horse, a pleasure horse, an equitation horse, a fine harness horse or even as a jumper. "It was never a breed trait to be second best at anything, " it has' been claimed. The horses at Adanac are trained for riding and driving. The Morgan horse is also noted for its gentleness and easy temperment. Present day Morgans differ remarkably little from their mighty progenitor. progenitor. Some, selection has been made over the past century in order to adapt the hfped moderately to modern usage. Its major use; wag at one time, naturally, a harness horse. Today, it is under saddle and this has caused some selection of horses with a little added size and some what sharper withers. The Morgan breed dates back,-to the 1780s when a colt was born of thorough- breed and Arabian ancestry ancestry showing straight clean legs, deep musculing over quarters and shoulders and with a short, fine head with its large expressive eyes and short, pricked ears. The owner of the colt became Justin Morgan, a quiet spoken school teacher who in 1789 left Springfield, • Mass, to earn his fame and fortune in Vermont. Here, and for a number of owners, this horse built a reputation for strength, show and speed. He was a small horse, barely over fourteen- hands and never weighed much over one thou'sand pounds. Justin Morgan lived to be almost thirty years of age and worked continually for twenty-eight of these years It was from this horse that it is found today that the Morgan horse is showing showing up in showrings over all the continent competing within their own breed and almost as ably, outside the breed.
