The subjects will now be necessary to graduate from high school with a diploma. In speaking to Mr. W. H. Carman, local trustee on the Board of Education, he said it would make little difference at Clarke as already most students are coming close to this requirement. Mr. Darroll Devolin, on staff at the school and working with student guidance confirmed the opinion opinion of Mr; Carman, He pointed out that this year one hundred of the grade nine students were taking english and felt that at least ninety- five percent of the students would be taking the core subjects P" suggested by Mr. Wells. Mr. Devolin, did however state that hé did not feel that the Minister had gone quite far enough and that physical education should have been included in the list of compulsory compulsory subjects. The teacher also referred to the fact that in '1974 the ministry had made it a requirement that four English English courses and two courses in Canadian studies were required to graduate with a diploma. This, he said, was having its effect in the upper grades of the school. It was pointed out that Universities were over the past three years complaining of the quality of students entering the institutions and that this complaint was in eases quite justified. Mr. Devolin also noted that pressure pressure from parents and requirements requirements that a certain percentage must pass also had affected the quality of education. It was pointed out that even this year it had. been emphasized emphasized that student did have their choice to take whatever subjects they wished in grade nine. But as a matter of fact most students are taking a majority of the compulsory subjects which will be à must in the coming school term.
