10--OrOno Weekly Times, Wednesday, October 27th, 1976 Queen's park report Statement by Doug Moffatt, .MPP, NDP , critic for the ■ Ministry of Consumer and 1 'Commercial Relations, • and Ed Philip, MPP, NDP critic , for,the Ministry of Transport- '/ atibn and Communications , re: the gas station fiasco or the consumer dilemma. The mysterious, confusing , and often misleading game of marketing gasoline has gone far enough and government action to protect the motoring , public and the retail dealers is long overdue. Conside the facts. 1. Most of the self serves are wholly owned arid operated by the major oil companies. Where is the opportunity for. the small enterprising operator? operator? When most of the stations in a given area are self serves, owned by the foreign-owned major companies, companies, is there not a monopolistic monopolistic situation which places the consumer at a disadvantage? disadvantage? 2. Why is it that motorists on 401 and 400 pay significantly more for gas at the so-called service centres? Is it because of .the captive market? When access is controlled, and the amount of traffic on these expressways is increasing, surely this gouging is an unnecessary contribution ot inflation. 3. Within 40 miles of Toronto the price of the same gasoline at Gulf stations ranges from 75 cents to 93.4 cents. The lowest price is on Highway 115 iri Newcastle where 2 small independents are being squeezed by Gulf, Esso and Texaco. The obvious intent is to eliminate the competition and then prices will be raised.; If this is not the case, then now can the price disparities be explained? Surely the operators are not selling at a loss. The major companies must be cutting prices to these dealers hnd if this is the case, motorists are paying . more in other centres to subsidize the loss. e • e e • e e a • e e e • e October Special On Chain Saws The Pioneer Full-Feature Lightweights A lot more chain saw for your money. w mr l P20 ny • ) Come in and Age'll prove it. In fact, the increased number of repairs due to lack of reliable servicing by attendants may iri the long run cost more. The regular look "under the hood" by a neighbourhood service station attendant detected detected a faulty voltage regulator regulator and prevented the eventual eventual destruction of battery and alternator and saved one motorist a repair bill in the $150.00 range. It is fact that an under-inflated tire drastically increases gas consumption. At a self serve, if the testing device is there at all, who checks tires? 5. The questions above.were not adequately dealt with by the Isbister Qornmission. they related directly to energy. energy. It is time that the Minister of Consumer and Commercial Relations, the Minister of 1 Transportation and Communications, Communications, and the Minister of Energy took a serious and concerted interest in this sector of the economy. Buck passing, inflated egotistical statements and senseless posturing posturing are not in style. We propose: 1. The Municipal Act should be amended to allow municipalities municipalities to determine and legislate the ratio of self serves to "full service" stations 2. Divorcement legislation, gs in several U.S. states, should be enacted to prohibit opération of retail outlets hv oil companies. 3: Standard wholesale ga* prices to all dealers wbi would allow fair competition - at the local level. Medicial surveys are beginning to show that women women are catching up to men - in lung cancer incidence. As more women are smoking, smoking, more are developing lung cancer. In the last decade women's death rates have doubled for this type of cancer which previously atta- acked mostly men. Some researchers say that we are experiencing an "epidemic of lung cancer in women" which has not yét peaked and which will continue to increase if women continue to smoke. There is concern over the sharp increase in the number of teenage girls who are smoking. More than 15 per cent of girls between 12 and 18 years of age smoke - this is just a fraction under the number of boys in the same age group who smoke. Studies has shown that those who start young tend to smoke heavily, thereby running the greatest risk of contracting diseases related to smoking. • Until recently, women have had a false sense of security about the effects of smoking on their health. Studies on smoking showed men as the victims of cigarette-induced cancers. The damage to women has become apparent more slowly since they haven't haven't -smoked as long or as heavily as men and since the effects of smoking don't show up for a number of years after a person is "hooked". But gradually the evidence is coming in that women are also susceptible to the effects of smoking. In 'addition to luhg cancer, women who smoke have a greater chance pf developing heart disease, emphysema, cancers of the month and larynx, and other serious diseases. Women who smoke have also been found to spend more days sick in bed with less' serious ailments and to lose many more work days than women who don't smoke. Studies are also showing that women who smoke may Orono Landscaping SODDING--PLANTING SEEDING be endangering the health of innocent victims of their habit. The harmful effects of smoking extend to a pregnant woman's unborn child. Small babies frequently frequently have difficulty getting a good start in life, and their physical and emotional development development during childhood may be affected. In addition, women who smoke during pregnancy, are more likely to have a stillborn- infant or a baby who dies soon after birth. Smoking is definitely not all th excitement and glamour that cigarette advertisers promote it to be.
