frOrono Weekly Times, Wednesday, October 27th, 1976 Indian threatens drastic action ' Larry Johnson, a treaty research worker with tne Union of Ontario Indians has been -reportèd to have said that "drastic action" may have to be taken to prevent the desecration of Indian graves, by acheologists. He was at the time referring to diggings at the site of the proposed Pickering airport. . Mr. Johnson stated he has had little success to date to stop the work of the archeologists archeologists or to even speak with them. It was pointed out that Indians believe that the remains Of their ancestors have to return to the eartl) in order to complete the natural cycle of life and death. He cited the example of a band in the United States who bought shovels and marched on the white community's cemetery to place their problem before the general public. "They got fast action after that," he said. Conservation a saving This year, the people of Ontario will spend an estimated estimated $7.5 billion on all forms of energy. In short, we've been spending about $900 annually for every man, woman and child in the Province on energy, Up to 20 per cent of that could, be saved through properly maintained maintained vehicles, better driv- , ing habits, more careful consumption practices and properly insulated homes. The Ontario Government has proclaimed the first week of November Energy Conservation Conservation Week in order to increase public awareness of the need to conserve energy. An increased public awareness awareness should stimulate people to take steps to reduce their energy bills this winter. We hope that the savings that can be made will ultimately add up to a billion dollar reduction in the Province's Province's overall energy bill by 1980. I hope that during Energy Conservation Week you will publish some of the best ideas your readers have on energy • conservation for personal and community benefit. ' Dennis R. Timbrell, Ontario Ministry of Energy. Letter to editor Cqncerning Mayor Garnet Rickard's letter in last week's paper ojr the subject of local taxes. Contrary to His 'Worship's windy words that went to great length to make a* mountain out of a molehill, the fact of higher taxes is not a profound or 'a complicated matter. It is elementary, municipal, Regional and school taxes have risen out of control because elected representatives representatives are spending too much money at their budget meetings. meetings. These elected repres- entalive&^have not said "no" when a new program requiring requiring fresh tax dollars appeared on their financial agendas. Result? Higher taxes. The equation is a simple one, the most costly the budget over previous budgets the higher the tax bite over the previous tax bilj. ' For instance, the New Town of Newcastle in 1974, the first year of its existence, spent $6.5 millions of dollars for municipal purposes. This figure" figure" jumped to $7.8 millions in 1975 and $9.4 millions for 1976. A total of $23.8 millions in three years. The area , School Board spent $23.6 millions of dollars for school purposes in 1974. This figure jumpêti to $27.6 millions in 1975 and this year the school budget is $31.6 millions. A total of $82.8 millions of 'dollars in threee . years. The Region of Durham spent $33.8 millions of-dollars in its first year of operation in 1974. In 1975, the figure was $37.4 millions and the current year $41.2 millions. Regional three year figure $112.4 millions millions of dollars. No long winded diatribe to explain the rise of local taxes. Local politicians have spent $219 millions of tax dollars on an increasing scale for the past three years. That is the answer to the question "why higher taxes every year." A solution to higher taxes. There will be a nomination meeting and an election for municipal, regional and school school board officials for the 1976 election within the next seven weeks. This gives people who are hollering about taxes two alternatives. These people can either become candidates in the election on a platform of "no tax increases" or else nominate, nominate, support and elect candidates candidates who have the word "No" in their volcabulary along with a loud voice and the guts to use the word even against popular causes and popular projects that need new tax dollar^. . . If frustrated people would do one of these two alternatives, alternatives, the tax situation in our community would soon adjust to acceptable levels. To sum up. There is no deep and dark mystique about land taxes increasing. Too many tax dollars are being spent by certain public office holders. I have taken the consistent stand since year one on the need to keep municipal spending spending at a level accpetable to a working class community. However, the records will show that my stand has not been supported by the majority majority of politicians that I work . with at both the local and Regional level and now the chickens are coming home to roost. It is time for a change. Kenneth E. Lyall, Councillor, ' Attention Farmers!!
