Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, November 17th, 1976 Cost of arena repair amounts to $3,000.00 ! I! Within a period of less than one week local volunteer labour along with Mr. Glenri Allin as supervisor, work has been completed on the Orono Arena and it is expected that skating could well be a fact , this Saturday. The project of repairs to the building were completed on Sunday following a full- scale start on Thursday of last week. Some preparatory work had been undertaken earlier in the week. The total cost of supplies are expected to be less than $3,000.00. Mr. Russel Major points out that some 421 hours were donated to the repairs through voluntary voluntary labour which would represent at least a further $2,600,00 to the project. In speaking with Mr. Glenn Allin, supervisor of the work, he said he had received some excellent help with the repairs. repairs. The cost of repairs had been estimated at $30,000.00 if le work was to be done - through the normal channels. The main work to be undertaken on the repairs included 2x6 bracing of joints and tieing-in of the bottom of the building . At most of the work sessions there was close to 25 volunteer men and women assisting with the program. Mr. Major said the Athletic had good support with the project. The ice making machines have been in operation for a number of days and it is expected that skating could well be a fact this coming Saturday with a full program in operation at the beginning of the week. The building use is now 'dependent on monitoring of wind and snow load which is .to be carried,out by the Athletic Association. The arena arena is to be closed if the wind velocity passes 35 miles per hour or if the snow and ice load increases above 5 poùnds per square foot. The Ministry of Labour has asked that extreme care be exercised in monitoring and that the consultant make periodic inspections inspections of the building during during the monitoring period. Use of the building under present conditions has been allowed until April 15, 1977. The requirements also included included that a daily record be kept of the monitoring. « 29 place names before electorate Nominations for municipal and school board election ised on Monday of this week > V^ith the result that a total of twenty-nine candidates have : qualified to seek election ig \ : their respective divisions. Acclamations were credited in three areas with all being by incumbent members and in relation to the School Board and the Separate BchooL Board. One of the heaviest slate of candidates is noted in Ward three for the two positions for Trustee for the Board of education where five candidates candidates have qualified. Cameron, New- ( Continued on pagp 5) Board Asks $30,000 For Old Kirby School The Northumberland and Newcastle Board of Educat- have offered the old Kirby School to the Town of Newcastle Newcastle for a purchase price of $30,000.00. In a letter to council the board stated that all legal problems in the sale of the property had been , cleared and that they were now in the position to make the land and building available available to the Town. It was also pointed out that from time to time the Clarke Museum and Archives had expressed an interest in acquiring the property for community arid workshop activities. The Board has asked the Town to submit an Offer to Purchase to the Board if they wish to acquire the property. When the matter came before council it was referred to a meeting of the finance committee, with the Museum Board being invited to attend. Counc. Cowman said the school was a public building and really belonged to the taxpayers in the area and as such they should not be asked to pay for it again. She felt the school should be turned over at no cost to the municipality. Counc, Allin stated that if was provincial law that a charge had to be made by the Board of Education. Counc. Lyall asked if council council would pay this amount for the old school and answered his own question with a "No." He said he would never vote to buy premises for $30,000.00. C N R Asks $1200 For Station Street Canadian National Railway has offered to thé Town of , Newcastle a portion of land west of Main Street kpown as Station Street for a sum of money in the amount of $1,200.00. Both were easily contained and put out., SANTA CLAUS IS COMING TO TOWN Qn Sunday, December 12th Santa will arrive in the Village courtesy of the Orono Chamber of Commerce. He will visit the children at a family skating party to be held in the Orono arena from 2.30 to 4.30 p.m. .According to Mr. Bob Ha'/olden there are to be some new features for the afternoon which will be announced at a later date. 'THIRTY FAVOUR ARENA-CÉNTRE COMPLEX According to Mr. Rus Major thirty of the fifty returns received favoured the construction of an arena-community centre corhplex for the Village of Drone. A total of fifty questioriairres were returned to the Association.
