GREAT PUMPRIN RACE On Halloween all the pupils of Lockhart School took part in a Great Pumpkin race. First the Grades 1, 2 and 3's had to race against each other's teams. There were four or five teams competing. There were prizes for the first team finished, the bést organized organized team and thé best looking Jack-o-0antern, Next came the Grade 4, 5 and 6's turn. Since we have House League T s we used those same tett-rfS. Again there were prizes as for the primary teams. These are three, to me, interesting items from Lock- ' hart School. are ready to watch a basket- High School, ball game at the Bowmanville Some time ago Bob Krea- sul of Bowmanville became quite interested in the Big Brothers 'Association. When the Town of Newcastle started started their program Bob went through the necessary screening, screening, was accepted and became became a member. Near the end of June he was introduced to 11-year-old Paul - a grade six student also'from Bowmanville. From then on they have met about once a week to take in variuos activities including hockey, baseball, lacrosse and just plain 'goof' around as well as a weekend fishing trip near- Perth. Bob noted that it is good to get a boy of Paul's age away from home and out with the boys once in a while, especially especially when he is surrounded with sisters at home. Paul looks forward to these weekly meetings and is quite enthusiatic about the winter months of skiing with Bob arid sailing next summer on Bob's sailboat. Bob states that being a Big Brother is psychologically satisfying and much more enjoyable than sitting around at some board meeting where nothing much gets done. One. thing Bob stresses is the fact that the time element is so flexible. If for some reason he is detained and cannot meet with Paul, all it takes is a simple phone call to make new plans. Ontario's growing economy has created a continuing need for qualified individuals in all fields, and especially in the skilled trades. . To meet this demand, the Ontario Ministry of Colleges and Universities Apprenticeship Program offers systematic on-the-job training and related classroom instruction in many trades. Depending on the trade, an apprenticeship varies in length from 2 to 5 years, and apprentices are paid an increasing percentage of the going rate for fully-qualified tradespeople. At the conclusion of the training period, an apprentice will qualify for a Certificate of Apprenticeship , and, where applicable, a Certificate of Qualification. ! Your Ontario Government has prepared a special booklet, "Training for the Skilled Trades ", which describes the apprenticeship program, lists the trades which it covers and explains how to get into the program.
