Mr. George Cameron, a member of the Northumberland Northumberland and Newcastle Board of edcuation from Ward 3 revealed revealed this information following following a meeting last week with representatives of the Minstry of Transportation . and Communications. Mr. Cameron said it appeared appeared a good possibility that the Ministry mav erect stop lights at the two intersections, Kirby and Taunton road, He said no consideration was being given to such at the Clarke High School nor did lie see any change in the Ministry policy with stopping at Enternrise. He did say that the Ministry is now listening to them over the problem and are as a result looking for solutions, He said there is to be some change in signing along the highway and that some Regional Regional signs are being moved to improve vision at some of the intersections. ' In speaking on school busing Mr. Cameron said that now those dn Bellwood Drive want the bus to travel their road to pick-up children. At the present time students living on the road have to ' walk to the third line for the bus, a distance of no more than three-quarters of a mile at the maximum. Good attendance at candidate forum The running battle between the two candidates for the mayor's office, Garnet Rickard Rickard and Ren Lyall, for the Town of Newcastle continued Monday night at an all-candidates all-candidates meeting held in Orono when attack and counterattack counterattack between the two corn tinued through most of the meeting. All speakers were seeking election in Ward (Continued page 3) RECONSIDERING fuuT PATROL FOR BOWMANVILLE The Region of Durham police commission is reconsidering reconsidering foot patrols for downtown Bowmanville as requested by the Town of Newcastlé council. A former decision of the commission had turned down the request feeling that Bowmanville had no specific problem requiring requiring such patrols. Counc. Allin told the committee committee of the whole on Monday that if the commission commission did approve the patrols it would only be on a temporary basis and during the evenings. P1LKEY PICKED AS PRESIDENT OF ONTARIO FEDERATION OF LABOUR On Tuesday Cliff Pilkey of Oshawa was elected president president of the Ontario Federation Federation of Labour when he polled 938 votes compared to 681 for incumbent, David Archer. The third candidate, Gordon Gordon Lambert received 135 votes. Mr. Archer has held the position of president for a period of nineteen years. Pilkey, 54, UAW citi?ehship and legislative department director , and an Oshawa Alderman was the first serious serious challenge to Archer and came off the victor. Mcllveen ran second to Moffatt in the last provincial election. TOSUGGESTRENTSCHOOL - A committee from the Clarke Museum board met with the finance committee on Monday when it was recommended, that council ask the school board to consider renting the old Kirby school for Museum purposes for a period of seven years at a modest rent. The Board of Education has put a price of "$30,000 on the sale of the building to the Town. The local Museum Board is interested in obtaining the school to use in their program. SPECIAL COUNCIL MEETING NOVEMBER 29th Town council will hold a special meeting on November 29th to discuss the Secondary plans for Courtice, Éowmanville and Newcastle. The meeting is being held in Court Rooni No. 2 at 9:00 am. The next regular meeting of council will be held on December 13th at 7:00 p.m. in the council chambers.
