A recent donation/" however, will help us with this problem; it is a Day Book of accounts for the Orono Furniture Furniture Factory - donated to the Museum by Mr. W.K.Lycett. The accounts date from 1868 to 1875; the flyleaf is inscribed to Archibald Townsend, Townsend, who ran the factory with Joseph Thomas up to; 1871, and to John Waddell, who operated it after that. Although the entries are far from detailed, they make fascinating reading. For ex-. ample: one doz. bonnet holders holders - $1.20; half doz. chair - $3.00; one high chair - 65 cents. Spindle and Board bedsteads ranged from $3.50 to $4.50. Some items were relatively more expensive; for instance, four crochet balls and mallets cost $2.50, but you could get a Boston rocker for $2.25. This was in 1868. And the type of wood made a difference - a cherry table is listed at $5.00. Or the style - six "spindle grecian chairs" sold for $10.00. Unfortunately, this does not give definite proof for furniture furniture styles, or even for their origins, because some was made in and purchased from the Bowmanville furniture factory to be sold in Orono, and vice versa in some cases.
