He said the people of the Orono area are fed up with a telephone service that goes nowhere. The system' in Orono .arid. area is operated by the Community Telephone Company Company of Ontario Ltd, with headquarters in Dunnville. The service rate includes free calling to Newcastle Village and Newtonville but all other; calls such as to Bowmanville and Oshawa are long distance calls. Harry Irwin states long distance calls are costing him a fortune and his monthly bills is running from $38.00 to $60.00. He points out that all his friends live in Oshawa and his business affairs are as well in Oshawa. He said the Orono subscribers should be able to call throughout the Durham Region toll-free. Last Friday he said he had some thirty to forty residents in the area phone him supporting his view. My* phone is ringing off the hook, he said. He said he intends to form an association similar to a ratepayer's association to , fight for an enlarged, toll-free calling area. "Something has to be done", he said, "the costs are just too high." The company recently asked asked for a 9.3 percent increase in monthly rates. This increase increase was approved by the Town of Newcastle with the condition it be accompanied by an extension of the toll-free calling area. The telephone company said an extension of the calling area would be too costly and would result in much higher rates having to be charged. Mr. Irwin said he intends to call a small meeting in the near future. The article referred to development in the Courtice Courtice - area and contained references to comments supposedly supposedly made by the planning director, Leslie Kristof during during an hour and a half interview. As a result of the article council members had reported reported a number of telephone calls from citizens of the Courtice area. The following is the report from the Town Manager. "Following the appearance of the article in the Oshawa Times on December 21st, 1978, regarding comments suppositively made by the Planning Director .several calls were made by Members of Council. and the Public regarding these comments. Since the appearance of this article a thorough discussion was held with the Planning Director and 1 find that in fact Mr. Kristof did grant the Reporter an interview which lasted Approximately one and a -half hours, during which time the bulk of the discussion was regarding the Courtice ' Heights Subdivision Second ary Access problem. The Planning Director also stated that he got involved explaining basic Planning Theory and planning problems problems in areas which started to develop on urban fringe areas before Mi planning controls apply. The article which appeared in the newspaper newspaper does not reflect the comments made by the Planning Planning Director because it was drastically abbreviated and comments were taken out of context and some of the quotes reflected by the Reporter Reporter were misquoted and in particular "Pioneers to Blame", Thé Planning Director also states that he did not mention any Ratepayers or any Members Members of Council by name. The reference to Councillor Cowman's Cowman's appearance before the Ontario Municipal Board was strictly the Reporter's own comments. The Planning Director feels that the way the article was written is misleading and he is very apologetic to the Council and the Public for creating such havoc. In the short time Mr. Kristof has been on staff he has assisted Council in solving solving many planning problems ( Continued .page 2 ) Draw MAYOR ON HOLIDAYS Mayor Rickard and his wife are holiday in the sunny south for a week or two. During this period Councillor Keith Barr will be acting Mayor for the Town of Newcastle. JAMBOREE THIS SUNDAY The first Jamboree of the new years will take place on Sunday, January 7th. There will be special guests and plenty of blue grass music. Plan to'arrive early. BOWMANVILLE ROBBERY The Champlain Restaurant located on Highway 401 at jîowmanville was robbed early Tuesday morning. At press time few details were available. A GALA riME ON NEW YEARS EVE There was plenty of activity in the area this New Year's Eve with sell-outs crowds attending dances at the Orono Arena, Newcastle Community Hall, Brownsdale Community Centre at the Forum Restaurant and at the Coach and Four. < Winners The following is a list of winners of the ten turkeys which were prizes offered in the annual draw under the' sponsorship of the Orono Oddfellows. The draw was held on December 22nd, 1978.
