Last Saturday started off similar to any Saturday this time of year but never in our wildest dreams were we prepared for its outcome nor for the damage to our ego. Shortly after eight a.m. Rick Patterson and myself arrived at the Times office to start the wheels of industry in operation but after a couple of hours it was unanimously decided that we could take off an hour to do some cross country skiing ... a decision i not too hard to make for either of us. As we hadn't yet skied the trails at the' Ganaraska Forest Forest Centre this year it was decided that the blue trail would be our target and we should be no more than an hour and a half away from the shop. '.Not only were we looking forward to the outing but were interested in our new systems of waxing which are to improve glide, and thus the speed as well as the climbing ability. It didn't, take long to find out that the glide and speed was greatly improved and we could expect a fairly fast trip along the trail providing we still held up on climbing the various hills The first part of the trail is along the flat for a hundred yards but then it dips gently after a left turn to be followed by a sharp right turn to a steeper dip followed again almost immediately by another another sharp right turn. There was no hesitation from the very beginning with Patterson leading the way and Forrester to follow shortly. shortly. A left turn and two right turns and I was ready to speed down the straight away. My attention at this time was diverted from skiing for a brief moment to a young lady all decked ' out in cross country finery looking a picture of health and beauty in this outdoor setting, Then ; much to my amazement she was standing in the middle of the trail and with too much speed to go further to the right and a look of fright in her eyes I took to my left bulling through a few small shrubs and landing on my back over a three foot bank. Going through the small shrubs and ovér the bank was not in itself spectacular but the landing on my back was, and especially so as it was in the bed of the small creek. It didn't take long to find out the water was wet and also cold. My skiing partner at this time peaked over the bank enquiring about my physical being and at the same time trying to camouflage a grin that had developed âcroSs his face. Orono Weekly Times, away, the water is getting colder and what about the others who might ski by wondering what it was in the stream or possibly following those two diverted ski tracks. And besides the pretty young lady had climbed down the bank to unfasten one ski allowing my le 8 to drop totally into the flow of cold water which was now flowing up the pant leg, No, the Times Wednesday, January 3rd, 1979-3 would have to wait for another day. We also found that it wasn't so easy to untangle skis, ski poles from a two hundred pound hulk in a muddy stream bottom but it was accomplished to return home • dripping water and mud and after a change of clothes to get back to work where things are much quieter and less hazardous. Accuracy Counts! We follow orders to the letter. .. guarantee all jobs! "Can you hold that pose until I run back and get the camera, it should make a good picture for the Times and we won't have many for the first issue of 1979". Good thinking I thought, except for the fact that' the camera is some five or ten minutés The Corporation of the Town of Newcastle NOTICE of Highway Closing TAKE NOTICE that the Council of The ^ Corporation of the Town of Newcastle, at a Council meeting to be held at the Council Chambers, Police Building, Bowmanville, Ontario, on Monday the 29th day of January, 1979, at the hour of 7:00 o'clock in the afternoon, propose to pass a by-law to stop up and close those parts of the road allowance between Lot 1 in the Sixth Concession and Lot 1 in the Seventh Concession, in the former Township of Clarke, more particularly described as follows: ALL AND SINGULAR that certain parcel or trhct of land and premises situate, lying and being in the Town of Newcastle, Regional Municipality of Durham, Province of Ontario, and being composed of all that portion of the original road allowance between Lot one (1) ' in the Sixth Concession and Lot One (1) in the _ Seventh Concession of the Geographic Township of Clarke, formerly in the County of ' Durham, more particularly designated as Parts One (1), Two (2) and Three (3) according to Plan 10R-887, deposited in the Land Registry Office for the Registry Division of Newcastle (No. 10) on November .17, 1978. : AND, FURTHER TAKE NOTICE that, before passing the said by-law Council, or a Committee of Council, shall hear in person, or by his counsel, solicitor or agent, any person who claims that his land will be .prejudically affected by the by-law and who applies -to be heard.
