K 4-Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, January 3rd, 1979 Boys Volleyball champions The boys and girls Volley- teams played against teams . High School, ball teams of the» Pines from the Great Pine Ridge's Senior Public School were Kinsmen and Kinettes over a Students from Clarke High both victorious in the recent two day period using gymns School refereed the games volleyball competition. Orono Tennant Fuel Atoms On Friday, December 22nd the Orono Atoms travelled to Manvers to play the Manvers Atoms. Orono defeated Manvers by a score of 6-1. Keith Vey Scored 3 goals for Orono and he also played a strong game on the defence. Paul Henry scored 2 goals with Scott Irwin collecting the other goal. Brad Roberts and Vaughn Chamners drew an assist each. The tirono team played a strong game and had their best offensive game of the season. The Orono Tennant Fuel Atoms travelled to the Lindsay-Ops tournament on December 26th. the Orono boys were defeated 3-2 by Omemee in the first game. The Orono goals were scored by Keith Vey and Steve Lycett with assists going to Scott McCullough, Brad Roberts and John Cowan. The second game of the tournament the Orono boys played a very good hockey club from Ops and were defeated 10-1 with Paul Henrÿ scoring the lone Orono goal. The Orono boys played well in the tournament and gave a 100 percent effort despite being short players through injuries and sickness. Orono O.AA.H.A. Midgets The Midgets took part in a tournment in Lindsay-Ops. arena on December 26th. The first team they faced in an eight team tournament was Omemee. Duane Major opened the scoring of the first period on an unassisted attempt. Omemee came back to tie it up and go ahead before the first period was oyer. They added another in the second period before Pete Kruhkert backhanded one in from Jim Moffatt and Jeff Westbrook. The game ended Orono 2 to Omemee's 4. This placed the Midgets on the Consolation side of the tourney against the Ops team to be played at eight" p.m. Ops got the only goal scored in the first period. Jeff Westbrook took his time, carried it out of the corner and fired it past the goalie, from Paul Reddick to even the score in the sëcond. Ops went ahead before the second period was over. At the start of the third period Jim Moffatt got the game tied up; working hard on a play with Duane Major and Pete Kruhkert. The game ended with a tie forcing a sudden death overtime. At the 2.50 mark Jeff Westbrook again worked hard in the corner and fired it at the goalie from the sharp angle, to dribble in and give Orono the win. This places them in the game for the Consulation Championship to be played on Wednesday, Dec. 27th in Lindsay. On Thursday the boys take part in a tournament in Port Perry. Happy New Year, everyone. Stutt's Bantams win Consulation Championship Barrie 5„ Orono 2 Orono' OMHA Bantams came out in front at a tournament held at the Lindsay-Ops arena. The "Bantams opened the tournament against a very strong team from Barrie. Steven Wood opened the scoring after knocking down a pass from Steve Stec in front of the Barrie goal. Barrie scored 5 goals before Steve Stec counted one on a nice pass-from Kirk Carr. Despite the score Orono was in the game all the way missing some good scoring chances. Kirk Carr hit a goal post and a cross bar which could have turned the game around. The boys were missing three of their regulars, Ken Farrow, Scott Ppescott and Steve Sawyer. The loss put the boys into thé Consulation side of the tournament. * Orono 3, Bowmanville 1 The 2nd game was played also in Lindsay on Dec. 27th with the locals taking a very close exciting game from Bowmanville. Ken Farrow returne,d to inspire the team to victory, scoring 1 goal and assisting on another. Vance Prue Our industrious left winger was sidelined for the 2nd game because of a pulled muscle. The 1st and 2nd periods were scorelss as both Bob Zych and Steve Skeéne played flawless goal. Scott Michelson scored thé first goal for Bowmanville at 2.08 of the 3rd period. Kirk,Carr tied the game at 6.23 of the 3rd period on a good set up by Ken Farrow. Steve Stec scored the winner at 7.18 on a good pass from Steve Wood. Ken Farrow put the "game a\yay at 9.51 scoring into the empty net as Bowmanville was making a last ditch effort to tie the game. Ops finally 'got one past Zych at 14.18 df the 3rd period, but with the help of his defence core Bobby closed the door,to take the championship. This Orono j$am though shorthanded due to injuries just neve.r stop trying and really deserved the consulation championship. If they ever get hpalthy, watch out.
