4-Ôropo Weekly Times, Wednesday, January 10th, 1979 ( JTôjrFà ) Tyke-Novice Hockey On Friday, January 5th, 1979 the local boys played Bewdley at the Orono arena. Orono came through with a big win by a score of 5-0: The goal scorers for Orono were Kevin Mumford for 2 goals and Jeff Martin for 2 and Ted Gaudet got 1. David Bailey earned the shut-out playing in goal for the local boys. Aaron Snider, Lawrence Haldaway and Brent Stapleton played a good game against the Bewdley boys. On Saturday, January 6th, 1979 the Orono boys travelled to Colbornç for a tournament. The first game was played against the Cobourg Leafs. The Cobourg team won by a score of 3-2. This was a well played game for both teams, as Cobourg scored the winning goal with only 18 seconds to play in the game. Goal scorers for Orono were Jeff Martin and Kevin Mumford. Richard Stolk and Todd Thertell played well in this game. In the second game the Orono boys played the Cobourg Bruins. Orono again went down to defeat by a score of 2-1. This was also a well played game with the winning goal coming late in the third period. Brent Hutton scored the Orono goal. Stuart Irwin and Todd Hutton played a good game for the Orono boys. United County Atoms Dec. 29th, 1978 Manvers United County Atom te^iri was in Orono for this Friday night game which saw Orono go down to defeat 4-0. The Orono team played well but couldn't seem to connect in front of the Manvers net. January 5th, 1979 The Orono United County team played host to the Bewdley B. team which saw Orono defeated 13-0. The Bewdley team are a good skating and passing team and were just too much for the Orono team. December 22, 1978 The Orono United County Atoms played host to Newcastle and were defeated by a score of 5-2. Orono opened the scoring when Darren Dennis put in a pass from Derek Anderson. Shawn Bailey counted for the second Orono goal. This goal was unassisted. Newcastle then came on strong scoring 5 goals, Allan Hall played well between the pipes for Orono. January 6th, 1979 The Orono Atom team travelled to Oshawa to play a house league team but were defeated 4-1. Blaine Bruton got the lone Orono goal. The Orono team played well, especially Allan Hall in the Orono net. Orono Tennant Fuel Atoms On Saturday, December 30th the Tennant Fuel Atoms travelled to Port Perry to play the Oshawa Bruins. The Bruins defeated Orono by a score of 4-1. Paul Henry scored the Orono goal with assists going to Wayne Atkins and David Little. Chris Langford played a super game in the Orono net. Minden Tournament - Orpno 2, Millbrook 0 The Orono Tennant Fuels played good fundamental hockey in the first game. Paul Henry anti Eric Dreslinski scored thp Orono goals with assists going to Vaughn Chambers, David Little and Keith Vey. Eric Dreslinski, Vaughn Chambers and David Little played strong 'games. 1 . ■ 'i ' Orono 1, Oshawa 1 Orono defeated Oshawa because they scored the first goal of the game. The game featured some good checking and scoring chances. Steve Lycett scored the Orono goal with assists going to Vaughn Chambers and Paul Henry. Steve Lycett, Paul Henry and Wayne Atkins played strong games. Bracebridge 8, Orono 1 Orono played a good game but were outclassed by a very well disciplined Bracebridge club. Bracebridge played their positions very well and they moved the puck with a lot of authority. Eric Dreslinski scored the Orono goal unassisted. unassisted. Chris Langford played three strong games in the «Orono goal. Brad Roberts, Scott McCullough and Mark Sargent played strorig games. The Orono boys played good hockey during the tournament and they showed good discipline both on and off the ice. Hamiltons Insurance Pee Wees Dec. 26th - Toros 2, Orono'0 ' Orono travelled to the Lindsay-Ops tournament the day after Christmas. The Bowmanville Toifos were ready for the Orono boys getting 2 goals and going on to shutout Orono who could not seem to get going. Dec. 26th - Lindsay, 4, Orono 3 In the second game of the day Orono played Lindsay with the Orono squad coming out on the short end of a 4-3 score. The Orono goals were scored by Randy Tennant, Derek Mumford and Glyn Jenkins, assists going to Pa,ul Rosseau and Stephen Murree. Everyone had a good time at the Tournament but must have eaten too much turkey at Christmas dinner. ♦Jan. 6th - Orono 5. Manvers 4 Orono played host to Manvers OMHA Pee Wees on Saturday evening. At the end of the first period the score was tied at 1-1. In the second Manvers scored two goals with Orono missing the net on many occasions. Orono finally ' found the net in the third period scoring four goals to Manvers one. Orono goal scorers' were Greg Vey (2), Mike Ball, Randy Tennant, Glyn Jenkins, assists going to Glyn Jenkins, Stephen Murree, Derek Mumford (2), Mike Ball. This was a good win for the Pee Wees making a come back 1 in the third period with hustle and desire. A special mention to Greg Vey who never gives up and always gives 100' percent, a great way to start 1979. Jan. 7th - Orono 3, Peterborough 3 , On Srinday evening the Pee Wees travelled to Peterborough to meet the Liftlock ' IGA Minor Bs. It was a fast skating contest with lots of action. Orono's defence came up with a strong game also with Jeff Green in net' keeping Peterborough Peterborough to 3 goals until the forwards found the range. This was the second game in as many nights that Orono made a good come back in the third period. Goal scorers where Glyn Jenkins with .2, Randy, Tennant 1, assists going to Paul Rosseau, Rodger King, Murray Dennis and Steve Sawyer. Glyn Jenkins and Greg Vey played a very strong game - ntçe going guys, keep up the good work. Orono United Counties Pee Wees The boys have had a busy time this past coule of weeks. On December 29th they travelled to Port Hope for a tournament. They didn't win either game but were in there fighting until a few fundamental mistakes caught up with them. On January 4th travelling to Baltimore, the boys put in one of the best games of the season. Trailing by a 1-0 score, with three minutes left, Warren Lycett tied it up but the goal was disallowed. With splendid team effort like that for the rest of the season the boys could go a long,way. On January 5th back in Orono for a home league game against the rival Bewdley team, the boys got off to a strong start with a goal by Gilbert Wood, assisted by Ken Bailey. Bewdley then struck for an early second period and third period goal. The boys got off track in the third and couldn't get straightened around. A good effort was put forth by David Dawes and Mark Henry. Stutt's OMHA Bantams Newcastle 3, Orono 2 On January 2nd Orono tangled with their next door neighbours in Newcastle. As always the old rivalry brought forth an excellent game featuring lots of hitting,, and good scoring opportunities. Steve Sted opened the scoring on a great combination with Vance Prue arid Jeff Gray. Newcastle scored 2 goals before Ken Farrow tied it early in the 3rd period with help from Steve Wood and • Dennis, Klawitter. Newcastle got a lucky break when Bob Stiles picked up a bad pass to score the winner. The Orono boys put on a good rally in the dicing minutes but failed to score. Bob Zych and Neil DeJong were both outstanding in the Opposing nets. Port Hope 6, Orono 3 Friday, January 5th Stutt's boys travelled to Port Hope only to play one of their poorer games. It seemed to -be an off night for everyone. Kirk Carr got the first goal with an assist to Vance Prue. Ken Farrow scored the 2nd goal assisted by Denis Klawitter and Denis Klawitter scored the 3rd goal assisted by Ken Farrow. Geoff Green played well in net for the 1st time with the Bantam team. Orono 3, Sunderland 3 Saturday, January 6th the Orono boys sported their new uniforms for the 1st time on home ice and came up with a big game tieing a strong team from Siinder- land. Jeff Gray had his best night of the season scoring 2 goals. After Sunderland scored a couple of quick goals Jeff got the team* rolling when he deflected a Vance Prue blast from the point. Jeff Gray cranked home his 2nd of the night to tie the game on a good play from Steve Stec and Steve Graham. Kirk Carr scored the third goal when he deflected Paul King's drive from the point. Bob Zych was sensational between the pipes kicking out 28 shots. Orono OMHA Midgets January 8th, Orono played New,castle New,castle for the weekly home game of the OMHA schedule. In the first period Newcastle opened the scoring with just,30 seconds* into the game. Ken Prescott tied it up connecting.with B,ob Myles. By the end of the first period Newcastle had added two, more. Paul Reed worked effectively in front of the net and tipped in a Bob Myles, • Pete Kruhkert pass for th'e first second period goal. Then Paul Reed blasted in another one, this time from Pete Kruhkert and Terry Hedges to tie the game up. Newcastle scored again to end the second. Orono, with a two man advantage for four minutes, could not score and Newcastle on the fly, added two more in the third before Jim Moffatt broke away and slid one by the goalie unassisted. Newcastle got two more to end the game Newcastle 8, Orono 4. On Sunday, January 7th, Orono participated in a Tournament in Port Hope. Although competing against* much • stronger opposition, they did put up two good games. The first game was against Port Hope and ended with Port Hope 7, Orono 2-, The first Orono goal came from Pete Kruhkert, passed along by terry Hedges. A1 Webster back-handed • the second Orono goal in, working with Peter Krukhert and Duane Major. The second game paired Orono with Cobourg who made it six for their team, to Ororio's one. This goal came off the stick of Paul Reed, from Jim Moffatt and Pete Kruhkert. On Tuesday,'January 2nd, Millbrook was in town for an exhibition game. The first period was scoreless and halfway through the second Paul Reed snapped in a beauty from Ken Prescott and Preston Long. About a minute later, Millbrook tied it up. At the start of the third Duane Major blasted one.in the top corner, on a bëautiful pass from Pete Kruhkert. Millbrook again tied it up. Paul Reddick got the winning goal with a sizzling shot from the point, passed along by. Pete Kruhkert and Jim Moffat working on a power play to end the game Orono 3, Millbrook 2. Port Perry had-a tournament on December 28th which saw the boys loose two games to /higher classed centres. * Unionville was the first game and it ended a six to two contest. Orono's goals came from Ken Prescott and Pete Kruhkert with assists to Paul Reddick and Jim Moffatt. The second game Port Perry defeated the boys seven to one! This goal came from Paul Reed, teaming up with Jim Moffatt. The Lijidsay-Ops Tournament saw the boys make it to the Consulafion Final to be defeated by Markham by a score of 5-1. During the last seven games, Dan Barlow had played well between the pipes. Ross Stutt and Rich Robinson have contributed greatly. With playoff approaching approaching fast the team should, start to gear up for 100 percent efforts in team play.
