6-Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday,, January 10th, 1979 Kendal News Good are the things we cannot buy; Eyes that, may see a bright blue sky, Ears that may catch the voice of spring, Strength for the tasks each day will bring; Love and laughter - an appetite Sleep that blesses us in the night. We seem to be having some violent fluctuations in our weather pattern. Our weather is not nearly as bad as the weather in Europe this winter thus far. On Sunday morning the scripture reading was Zeph- aniah 3:8-20. Zephaniah was a prophet of royal lineage. He looked upon the wickedness of the people and warned them of the punishment that would come. He called on them to repent. If they repented the future would be bright. In verse fourteen, he says, "Sing O daughters of Zion; shout, 0 Israel: be glad and rejoice with all your heart". In other words he tells them. "These things shall be a loftier race than e'er the world has known shall rise." In verse nine of chapter three he says, "That they may all call upon the name of the Lord to serve him". People of all nations and races. Rev. A. Tizzard reminded us of the hymn sing at Newtonville next Sunday evening at 7:30 p.m. The Kendal Women's Institute Institute Cook Books are how ready for sale. The United Church Women mét at the home of Mrs. ; Eleanor Foster on â very cold afternoon January 3rd. Some of our ladies did not come because of the ice which seemed to be everywhere. Some had already fallen. The president Mrs. R. Elliott welcomed all into the New Year and opened the meeting with a new year poem. Mrs. ]yi. Stevens read a prayer for thp new year. We sang, "What a friend We have in Jesus". Mrs. E. Foster gave the devotional telling of God's answer to prayer in the lives of two Christians. Mrs. J. Carscadden read the prayer of Mary as given in St. Luke 1:46-55. The roll call was: suggest some improvement we could make in our U:C.W.. It was agreed our greatest need was for more members. Also we would like to help the Sunday School especially since this is "The year of the child". The minutes were read and the financial report given. It was moved by Mrs. M. Stevens, sec. by Mrs. E. Foster that we purchase three trays at $3.95 each for the church kitchen. Carried. Then the program for thé coming year was planned. April is to be a special meeting when we will invite the neighbouring U.C.W.'s and have slides on the marine mission of our church on the Pacific Coast, given by one who travelled up the coast on the Thomas Crosby V this past summer. The offering was $6.25. Lunch was provided provided by Mrs. G. Cathcart and our hostess. Next meet ing will be at the home of Mrs. R. Elliott on February 7th. For many years the Durham Durham Health Unit provided cod liver oil tablets for the school pupils. Each child was given onë a day to prevent colds. Recently the cost became so high that it was discontinued. However, it would be wise for the parents to buy halibut, liver oil capsules for the children during the winter months when there is so little sunshine. One hundred cost a dollar and a half. Prevention of colds is better than cure. Could it happen The alphabet as we know it, A to Z, may be cut to A to M this year in local schools. The Board of Education which has held its first budget meeting is faced with increased tâxes or cuts in the educational program for 1979. It'S " All in the Family" at Dunlops The George Dunlop family, of Orono have rang up a string of wins as far as lucky draws are concerned. It could be said* they are keeping it 'all in the family'. Starting back last February Mr. and Mrs. Dunlop and family were visiting with Mr. and Mrs. Bruce Mercer and family in Manitowaning when George won the first price in the skating carnival draw, a portable radio. Again visiting this Christmas Christmas the fop three carnival lucky prizes were won by the George Dunlop family. Out ofy 2000 tickets in the draw George won the first prize with his granddaughter Janette Janette Mercer winning the second prize and his wife, Violet winning the third prize. George and daughter Shirley Shirley also won the hidden prize at a bowling event prior to Christmas, in - Newcastle. Adding it further in keeping it all in the family, Mr. and Mrs. Bill Larife (nee Bonnie Dunlop) Dunlop) won a set of TV tables in a New Years Eve draw. i If the Dunlop family keeps up this record there will hardly be any reason for anyone else purchasing raffle tickets.
