4-Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, January 17th, 1979 ( SPORTS ) United County Atoms January 10th The United County Atoms travelled to Baltimore where they played an exciting game only to see the game end in a scoreless tie. Orono controlled the play throughout most of the game but couldn't seem to put it past the Baltimore goalie. Allan Hall came up with some good saves in the Orono net! Shane Harbinson played a strong game for the Orono team. Jan. 12th Fernhill Nipigon Atoms came from. Oshawa to play the Orono team. Oshawa defeated Orono 5-0 despite a .fairly well played game by the Orono team. Mike Lane played well on the Orono dëfence. Centreman Derek Anderson also played a strong game for the Orono team. Orono Tennant Fuel Atoms The Orono Tennant Fuel Atoms hosted Pickering on Monday , Jan. 8th for a league game which ended in a 1-1 tie. There was no scoring until 5:46 of the third period when David Little scored for Opno with the assist going to" Chris Langford. Then Pickering tied the game with 50 seconds left when they "pulled their goalie. John Cowan and Bill Buchanan played strong games for Orono. On Tuesday, Jan. 9th the Tennant Fuel Atoms played an exhibition game against Manvers at the Orono arena. Orono defeated Manvers by a score of 3-1. Paul Henry scored two goals for Orono with Brad Roberts collecting the single marker. John Cowan had an assist. The Orono boys have played good hockey the last two weeks and are undefeated in 4 of their last 5 games. The Tennant Fuel Atoms travelled to Pqrt Perry on Friday, January 12th for a league game. Port Perry defeated Orono by a score of 9-0. The Orono boys had an off night after putting together a consecutive string of good hockey. .On Sunday, Jan. 14th the Tennant Fuel Atoms travelled to Beaverton for a league game. The game ended in a 3-3 tie. Brad Roberts scored two goals for Orono and Keith Vey scored the other goal. Keith Vey, John Cowan and Eric DreslinSki had an assist each for Orono. The line of Brad Roberts, John Cowan and Scott McCullough McCullough played strong games for Orono. Orono OMHA Midgets Uxbridge was the opposition on Monday night for the weekly home game. They popped two by goalie Dan Barlow in the first period and got another in the second before Orono got on the board. Duane Major ripped one from his blue line and their defenceman deflected it by his goaliefor the goal. Paul Reed snapped in a Pete Kruhkert pass for another Orono goal, to end the second period with Uxbridge ahead by a score of 6-2. Paul Reed scored again this time from Ken Prescott. Uxbridge addéd four more during the third period; to end the game Uxbridge 10 to Orono's 4. The last goal was scored 'by Terry Hedges with a sizzling shot from the point, passed along by Duane Major. On Saturday, January 13th, the Oshawa LNHL Red Wings were played in Newcastle. Orono went ahead with two quick goals in the first period. Paul Reed poked the first one in, from Duane Major and Terry Hedges. Then Terry Hedges slipped into the slot for the next counter, from A1 Webster. Oshawa got a goal to end the first. Ross Stutt put the boys up two this one from Pete Kruhkert and Preston Long. Then Orono backed off and Oshawa tied it up to en'd the second. Oshawa went ahead early in the third but not for long as Preston Long clicked with Pete Krukhert and A1 Webster. Ken Prescott banged in the go ahead goal with Paul Reed and Terry Hedges. With just fifty seconds left Paul Reed got the insurance goal to end the game Orono 6 to Oshawa's 4. Assists on the play went to Ross Stutt and Ken Prescott. Just before the boys were to play Oshawa the manager of the Bowmanville Toro's Major Midget team called, the team that was to play them couldn't come because of bad driving conditions, so after the game in Newcastle off we went to Bowmanville to participate in their Young Canada week hockey games. The boys held the Toro's scoreless for the first period and part way into the second period before they |ot one. Final score was 13-2. Orono goals were by Pete Kruhkert and Paul Reed,,with assists to Ross Stutt and Jim Moffatt, Goalie Dan Barlow and Richard RobinSon also deserve honourable mention as they, with the above mentioned players, made up the two lines who had a practise in the morning from 8 to 9, played * Oshawa from 3 to 4 and then played the Bowmanville Major Toro's from 5 to 6. Good effoft, b'oys. " On January 9th, Orono was defeated by Newcastle by 6-2. Assists were creditied to Jim Moffatt, Pete Kruhkert on goals scored by Paul Reed and Duane Major. Both teams came out playing strong and kept the first period scoreless. Greg Vey put the Orono team on the scoreboard early in the second period on a pass from Randy Tennant and Robert French with Randy Tennant putting the boys ahead by a two goal lead assisted by Glyn Jenkins and Paul Rosseau with less than five minutes left in the period. Greg Vey came out flying in the third period to put Orono ahead 3-0 with an unassisted goal with Bay Ridges coming back to score their only goal in the last six minutes of play ending the game 3-1. It was a well played and exciting game with Geoff Green making some super saves in the Orono net. January 13th - Orono 2, Fenelon Falls 9 Saturday evening even with the freezing rain Fenelon Falls Pee Wees travelled to Orono and caught the local boys sleeping. By the time they awoke the visitors had scored nine goals. This was a disappointment for the fans who came to see thé game. Orono goals were scored by Mike Ball, Greg Vey with assists going to Stephen Murree and Glyn Jenkins. Geoff Green and Chris Langford handled the goaltending but did not have much support. Lets hope Orono can get their game together as playdowns will be starting soon. Penalties played a big part, with Orono loosing their cool and taking 16 minutes to Fenelon Falls 4 minutes. Lets dig down deep guys and get your game together before its too late. Stutt's OMHA Bantams Pickering 6, Orono 3 January 10th Orono travelled to Pickering Village for their first meeting of the season. The Orono boys played a very aggressive game which ended up with many penalties. Steve Stec lead the team scoring picking up a pair of goals and Ken Farrow scored the third. Kirk Carr and Steve Sawyer counted assists. We hope the team will show a little more discipline in the return match coming up January 27th in Orono. Orono 6, Fenelon Falls 3 The Bantams finally broke out of their slump to earn 'a well deserved win over a good team from Fenelon Falls. The return of Scott Prescott shaped yp the defence as Scotty and the rpst of the defence played well. Now if we can just get Vance Prae back in the line-up the team should be ready to roll,. The Orono boys struck for 4 first period goals. The 1st scored by Steve SteC with only 1.10 gone in the game. Ed King and Kirk Carr assisted on the play, The 2nd marker came off the stick of Kirk Carr on a pretty play from line mates Steve Stec and Jeff Gray. Kirk Carr also scored the 3rd goal, this time with help from Steve Graham aqd Steve Stec. Steve Wood popped the 4th goal with assists from Ken Farrow and Denis Klawitter. Fenelon scored a power play goc^l to bring the score to 4-1. Early in the second period. Steve Wood tipped in an Ed King drive from the point for the 5th goal, and Ken Farrow also assisted on the play. Fenelon scored again before Ken Farrow tucked away the 6th goal on a nice setup from Paul King and Kirk Carr. Bob Zych had another sensational night between the pipes. At 1:00 p.m. on January 20th at the Ganàr- aska Foréât Centre, Jack Segal ,will demonstrate the craft of snowshoe construction construction and you are welcome to , browsç , through the display illustrating the history of snowshoes, Snowshoes are easy to use. One simply slips them on and starts off. As snowshoeing is a vigorous form of exercise it will not be long before you find yourself warming up. The chill of winter air will quickly disappear as you travel and you should dress with this in mind. For those of you interested, after the demonstration there will be a snowshoe hike. The Centre has a ' limited supply of snowshoes for those who don't have their own.
