But he who sings a merry . song And . gladly helps a friend along His life has worth and pleasure in it He uses every sparkling, minute! Lake Ontario is still open water, in spite of all the cold weather we have had. The forecast is for a January thaw after January 23rd. It was very icy and windy on Sunday but there was a fair turnout. It was communion communion Sunday. Rev. A. Tizzard chose as his scripture reading 1 Corinthians 1:12-31. He reminded us that next Sunday is our Annual Congregational Congregational meeting. After the service we will have a Pot Luck dinner followed by the meeting. All families are invited. We extend our sympathy to Mrs. A.R. Munro whose ' mother Mrs. E. Cole passed away in Bowmanville Hospital Hospital on January 7th. The funeral was in Toronto on January 9tji. She has lived on the sixth line for three years with her daughter and family. On Fraser Kelly's hour long T V. show he asks why bank tellers have to stand up all day when they could do just ] as efficient work sitting down. I often wondered that myself j and I'm sure you have too. A lady of eighty-three was stepping on the gas much too heavily so the policeman waved her to a stop. She said, "I haven't time to chat this morning. I'm late for' church and I'm the organist". Mrs. Bruce Cathcart is home again from Sunnybrook Hospital and Mrs. Mac Gar- butt is also home after surgery. We wish these two ladies perfect recovery. We received Christmas gifts from British Columbia and P.E.I. oh January 10th and 12th. It's rather nice to have a second Christmas. Twenty-five percent of the U.S. grain crop is used to produce alcohol. Seventy-five people a day die in Canada as a direct result of cigarette smoking. Tax take-up 110 percent The gross tax take in the Town of Newcastle has increased increased by a total of 110 percent. This comparison is made between the year 1973, prior to the formation of the Region and with the recent tax year of 1978. This figure was revealed in a treasury report at the finance committee meeting on Monday. Although the tax take in the Town has increased by the 110 percent 33 percent of this amount is due to increased assessed value of property in the Town. Inflation and increased increased spending records 67 percent of the increase which represents the increase in the individual tax bill during the six year period. The finance committee are to further discuss the paper at a meeting on January 29th along with a further report to be prepared by the treasurer in the matter of the new tax system and its effect on taxpayers in 1979. Counc. Cowman in asking for the further report said she would like to know now what the effect qf the new tax system was to be rather than learning after the tax bills'had been issued r f z =7= 2 57i pi Accuracy ji Counts! sj p We follow orders to the | ... , letter...guarantee all B jobs!
