Community Care continues to grow Last year the Newcastle Community Care Advisory Board often referred to the day when' the rapid growth in their number of senior clients and volunteers would level off. It just hasn't happened that way. Today 152 volunteers volunteers are assisting 211 seniors with tasks such as transportation transportation to appointments and shopping, snow removal, friendly visiting, light housekeeping, housekeeping, etc. Community Care began here in the fall of 1977 as part of a region-wide program 1 partially funded by a two- year grant from the Ministry of Community and Social Services. In addition, extra funding is received from the Ministry of Health for training training and Co-ordinating volunteers volunteers to work with persons under severe stress. Last ! year, a further grant was received from the Town of Newcastle. Local service clubs have been generous with donations and many voluntèers and seniors have repeatedly made personal donations. As Community Care has grown so rapidly (along with the inflation with which we are all so familiar) so have the expenses of running the program. In order to main tain a downtown location, an increase in rent was inevitable. inevitable. Because the board felt that the service must be equally accessible to all of Newcastle's seniors, a Zenith number was necessary and màny out-going calls toOrono and Newtonville are placed each day. (An average telephone telephone bill is $130.00 a month even though all possible measures have been taken to keep this expense down). The only paid staff locally is a full-time co-ordinator on a part-time salary. Recently a Fund Raising Committee has been holding evènts to make up this year's deficit. As Community Care looks toward its third year beginning next fall, it must await the Ministry's decision on whether further grant money will be available. Even if a grant is received, there is little doubt that a minimum of 20 percent of the total annual budget will have to be raised locally. But one fact is certain, a steadily increasing number of Newcastle's Newcastle's seniors have come to rely heavily on Community Care and it must never be allowed to falter Fitness is a national issue.
