Would extend French to 5 and 6 The French Committee of the Northumberland- and Newcastle Board of Education Education has proposed to the full board that french teaching be extended to grades 5 and 6 in the coming school term. The Board now provides a core french program in grades 7 and 8 and this latest move by the committee would extend the 20 minutes french class per day into grades 5 and 6. The proposal from the committee is, tempored with the program not being over the ceiling in the french program budget. The 1 board now hires thirteen teachers for the core program as well as eight teachers for the french immersion program. It has been estimated that it would cost a total of $182,000 to add french to the courses in grades 5 and 6 for the school term of 1979-80. The cost to the local taxpayers would be in the neighbourhood of $40,000.00. Trustee William Carman had asked that the french program stand pat for the time being so they could assess the result of french being taught in grades 7 and 8 at the grade nine level. It was felt at this point the board could not assess just what students were doing in grade nine (secondary school) as to continuing with french from their grade 8 experience. Carman was told that the inclusion of french in grades 5 and 6 could mean the shortening shortening of most programs to accommodate thet french classes. Orono Weekly .Times,. Wednesday.
